The most galling aspect of all this is... oh wait, I don't have enough time, space or willpower to get to the end of that inevitably lengthy list Evil or Very Mad ...

"The most galling aspect of all this is" that if she WERE to be tried for her undoubted crime she would be defended by another of the old boy/girl's network and sentenced by yet another. She'd probably get Legal Aid and insist that fiddling expenses is part of her Yuman Rites. Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto
Tricia's - 2006 Royal Blue Beetle Cabriolet Auto
Mine - 2014 Vespa GTS 300 Super Sport Matt Black
Ours - 2007 White Bailey Pageant Champagne

Did you know that MP's can't be sacked? Not even by the PM himself!

To all intents and purposes it looks like they have been sacked and the papers might report it that way but they resign. In a nutshell, the pressure on them from their peers and the PM is to such an extent that they throw the towel in and walk.

Picked that up when I studied public law in year 2 of the degree. It's all about the unwritten constitution and conventions etc. I can't remember specifics without digging out the books but suffice to say it wasn't the most exciting subject on the degree IMO Laughing LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

MPs can't, ministers can be sacked and return to the back benches. Receiving a jail sentence involves an a compulsory application to the Committee of One Hundreds, to all intents and purposes a mid term sacking my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis
2012 HSE SD4 In Orkney Grey now gone, best car ever.

thing is I want the MP representing my interests to be a bit of a bully and cheat, no room here for a jobs worth.

Not good that she cant add up or was chancing her arm, but good for her for not backing down, all MP's should fight like tigers for everything. Indeed they should have to fight like tigers to get what they want, instead of the Blair days of jam today, have what you like. our kids will foot the bill. That grinning fool should have been fed to the tigers At work

I like your general philosophy CG but there's no room for cheating the public purse. Aggressive, determined, principled, tough, hard etc etc YES... cheating, playing the system for personal gain, 'one rule for them, one for the rest' NO NO! ...

Most people are no different, how many of you would shy away from making a few quid on the quiet. Morally there is no difference between a couple of quid and a few thousand, just that she's in the public eye and got caught.
Examples of day to day cheating:
Cheap fags, mileage expenses, red diesel, tax returns, benefits, sat nav discs, the list is endless.
A cheat is a cheat is a cheat, rich or poor in the public eye or not, people in glass houses ...........

The difference, EY, being that, if you or I got caught doing these relatively minor cheats, we would be sacked, prosecuted, humiliated etc.

Seems that 'one rule for...' applies.

If I'd managed to screw my employer's expenses system to anything like the extent that MPs clearly can, I would have been dismissed & plod would have been called in. For one thing I would have been expected to supply RECEIPTS! None needed for Mr & Mrs Member of Parl.

I know of three ex-employees who tried this on to a relatively small(er) degree and all were sacked. One is in jail.

I don't necessarily blame the individual (although s(he) bears a serious responsibility... but the whole system stinks. ...

I worked in a LA and can tell you with absolute certainty that anyone fiddling 100th of what she has would have been sacked and prosecuted.

The level of probity required in public office is easily understood and not too difficult to comply with, unless you are a thieving conniving individual who actually believes that somehow its ok for you to steal and defraud and that fiddling 」40000+ is somehow a minor matter not worth pursuing by those charged with the responsibility to do so.

I also object to the idea that her mates can over ride the independent watchdog and reduce the amount to be paid back by around 90% - presumably setting a precedent for the future for other mates.

I agree, we all play the system a little and would accept the consequences if found out, she was and to a greater extent so she should be dismissed and prosecuted.
