Very loud loose metal rattle

Sounds like its from the front drivers side. Only when driving straight over bumps, small holes in the road, not when turning or reversing. I'm aware a number of people have posted on similar topics but there seems to be a lack of solutions to the problem. I have been under the whole car with a torch, knocked about every component, shield, joint and piece of trim, nothing is loose. Checked the engine bay, all as it should be, no loose components lying on the under shield, no random loose parts. I have checked the brakes, nothing seems loose, pads are good, so are discs. Suspension seems normal, no movement or loose joints. I can't replicate the sound by bouncing the car. Light housing is secure, body work, and front trim.... I have no idea.

Sorry for the huge post but it sends me mad not knowing what the problem is. Any suggestions would be brilliant!

England

Have you checked the air intake pipe, its the vent in the nearside wing, the bolt has a habit of coming loose and the whole thing rattles, opposite side to your perception but worth a look.

Would that be located at the top or bottom of the suspension?

I had a metallic rattle from the front wheels when going over bumps and speed bumps.

It was the brake pad retaining spring on the brake caliper causing mine.
Cost about 8 pound from the dealers which where cheaper than everywhere else I looked!

At first I thought it was a heat shield underneath, then the suspension mounts and finally with the car jacked up I noticed that the spring was missing or not fitted at the dealers!

Your a genius! Just had the front wheel off and yes, the clip is missing! Guessing by the name does just clip on? Does it require any clever adjustments?

Thanks for the help!

Oh good!

Piece off pee to fit I tried with the calliper off but ended up putting the calliper back on and using a bit force to locate the retainer.

After refitting I had a little bit of noise from the pad where it was now held against the brake disc and not slopping about but it cleared after the first journey of about 5 miles.

Euro car parts and some other company's supply a set of retainers at about £15-20 pound if you need it quick, but Land rover sell them individually for around £8. My local didn't stock them so had to wait two days.

The brakes are also the same as a ford s-max I believe, but Ford wanted more than Land Rover.

Could be a common issue with these retainers pinging off then. I just assumed that the dealer must of left it off when changing the pads before selling the car to me.

I did however notice the noise after a bit of off roading but this could have been coincidence.

At least we've had a good look underneath our cars whilst looking for this noise!

Just to up date, problem now solved!

Bought the spring for £8.40, fitted with a couple of flat head screw drivers, 5 minute job!

Thanks for the help, I can now drive down to Cornwall at the weekend without worrying Smile
