strange issue with 6 speed manual.

odd one
td4 manual with 20k mls, when the car is in 6th gear on the motorway at a steady 2000rpm and the accelerator is pressed hard to the floor the revs go up to 3500 rpm then back down again, then up then down 2000-4000 rpm.the engine note changes also.
in any other gear it does not do this,if I pull the handbrake on hard and try and drive away there is no clutch slip
any idea's.just started doing this .

That's the dreaded clutch slip. High gears around the torque peak at 2K rpm - that's when you'll get it, not in the lower gears.

I'm not going to argue with that!

First thing to do is talk to Mike - you may find he can get a contribution to the cost from LR.

FWIW my 09 has been doing this for the last few thousand miles (now at 32K), but only intermittently and from the sound of it not so bad (revs only jump around 4-500 rpm). It doesn't seem to be getting any worse, and doesn't impact at all on my daily driving (very little of which is on motorways), so for the moment I'm just living with it. If it gets to be a problem I'll sort it, of course, but for the moment I'm interested to see what happens - others have reported doing many thousands of miles like this, and even the problem going away after a time.

None of which means the situation is acceptable - LR seem to have fitted a clutch which simply isn't up to the job, and don't seem prepared to fix it properly at their own expense!

He's helped a number of people here when they've had problems.

There are a lot of posts on this topic. Do a search and read up, so that you have plenty of ammunition. From what I have read this may be caused by the automatic adjuster mechanism, which can get full of dust and stick. Which would explain why it can seem to go away and then come back. It seems likely that it's NOT a clutch problem per se, more a problem with the adjustment mechanism and flywheel. The cure seems to be replacement of the lot (and do slave cylinder while you're about it). It's therefore NOT just a wear and tear item.

I agree - it doesn't look like a problem with the clutch mechanism itself, and could very well be the adjuster mechanism or simply that the clutch spring isn't strong enough (another suggestion I've seen). The real problem is that working on the clutch is a gearbox out job, and that's a major task on the FL2.

well real eye opener with LR prices.clutch kit £240 genuine lr,£140 luk oem kit.dmf £325 genuine lr,£180 luk oem kit.
the luk oem kit is genuine lr units in a different box.
so 3 main agents quoted £1200-£1300 for clutch and £390 for dmf xtra.so roughly £1000 labour on the clutch alone.
then 3 lr indies quoted £330-£420 labour plus parts
another thing is lr genuine parts are 12 months warranty the luk kit is 24 months.

still only slips in 6th gear under heavy pedal so since I will be swopping the dmf as a precaution also I will leave until it gets worse then change.

My experiences might be of interest see below especially the images at the end. Mine was due to a faulty pressure plate where it was scraping along the guide pins. Hence the intermittent nature of the problem.

I'm going down the same route as you it appears.
I've already had one clutch/dmf replaced under warranty at 26k. The friction plate showed no wear, as good as new. It was the dmf.
Now it's happening again at 60k. The dealer wants £1290 Big Cry
I wish they'd admit the problem rather than just let us pay for it. After all, L/R crawl all the money back from the supplier. I know that cos once I worked there! It's a win win situation for L/R
So, even if L/R were to pay say 33% towards the bill, that would still come to £865
If I go down the route of getting my own parts and the local Indie fitting it the price is £685
I tried Mike at LRCS and took my car to my nearest dealer, which is a 70 mile round trip, and they said they couldn't find anything wrong despite taking 475 quid from me for a service. I had to take the car back again to show the tech that indeed the clutch was slipping but only at peak torque in 6th gear. Which he agreed.
Neither did they notice the very heavy steering which I fixed myself with a new reservoir and flushed system.
Am I their quality control or what?
It's a ruddy disgrace, I don't see why I should pay a penny for something which clearly isn't 'fit for the purpose for which it's intended'. Which is the law.
Then again, my son works for L/R at Gaydon......................
As did I
So I remain loyal albeit with a bitter taste.............
Unless Mike@LRCS can get it fixed for less than £685
Which I very doubt. never mind 'take it to the dealer and we'll take the gearbox off first'.
I know what's wrong.
And so does the dealer.
So Mike, stand up and be counted, get it sorted. This isn't and shouldn't be my problem. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

the luk parts are genuine parts in a different box,the problem I have is getting an indie to fit my parts as they prefere to supply their own parts and make 25/30% on them.but I will get it done when it goes, although it is only slipping in 6th gear the pedal is starting to get heavy.
