I have just changed my 2007 SE for a new SD4 hse lux automatic and have a few questions about the gearbox.

When selecting manual IE M/S mode, does the indication on the instrument panel change to S or M, I take it that S is for sport and M is for manual.
Also when I tested and auto at pentland im sure that when manual was selected the instrument panel showed the gear that was selected, when selected manual yesterday the panel indicated S not M and it did not show which gear was selected.

Can anybody through any light on this subject, I am new to an auto gearbox.

When you move the gearshift to the left for M/S, the central display will show "Command Shift Selected" before it changes to a golfball displaying the gear number that you are actually in. Subsequent shifts up/down will reflect in the display. Hope that helps. Foraging near Gaydon....

It took me about a week to get used to mine it does all gel eventually,this is my first auto and i love it.

And don't forget the auto box adapts to your style of driving - it might take a while to adapt fully

I also moved from a manual 2007 SE to a 2013 HSE Lux and think it is really great. I sometimes have a play in manual mode, especially in a built up area with steep hills, as the auto can hunt between gears at certain speeds but really has plenty of torque to cope without changing. I found it difficult to find information on how the gearbox 'learns' your driving style and how it copes with more than one driver in the family. My local dealer tells me that it remembers the previous two hours of use and bases it's operation on that. He may be telling me porkies, as I don't know any different but that would make sense to accommodate different drivers. Anybody know any different? Overall, love the car but getting used to higher fuel consumption compared to the manual SE. However, it has only covered just over 4k miles, so maybe hope for the future! 2007 SE Manual : Gone and missed but 2013 HSE Lux is better!

Using in sport mode makes it pull away in 2nd gear ! No good for towing !
My auto was best left to decide for itself and adapts after about 50 miles to your driving style.
When towing it will adapt to towing after approx 50 miles so first stretch will seem harder work and hunt around a bit.
My drive style was always careful and light footed so driving solo the gear change point was always around 1700 to 1900 rpm and towing after 50 miles would be around 2250 rpm.
Once adapted it would pull like a train towing on an autoroute at 70mph+ in top and would stay in top unless on very steep incline.
If it was driven harder it would hunt up and down the box like a yoyo.
Only down side was mpg, towing about 19-22mpg and solo average 29-33 on very odd occasion could get 37 and once got 42 over 370 miles but had to drive like a nun.
Now have a manual and towing gets me 28mpg and solo 38-43 mpg and it's only done 1900 miles so should get better yet. Jaguar x-type sport gone
