I have a 2007 FL2 which has only done 39,000 miles an seemed in excellent condition when I bought it last September, but I have been unhappy with the clutch for a while - it just didn't feel smooth, sort of 'gritty' in its action. Recently the clutch pedal has started to slow up on its return, springing back the last inch or so. However, in the last couple of days it seems to be getting worse and a couple of times the pedal has stayed depressed after changing gear - the clutch has released and isn't slipping. Anyone had this problem before and any suggestions as to fixing it? All help gratefully received. 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 SE in Sumatra Black. 38,000 miles. I would expect the labour charges to be high, it will be Gearbox out.

Took my FL2 into an independent today who has told me the 'rattle' I've got on tick over could mean my DMF needs replacing but still can't work out why the clutch pedal doesn't return occasionally. The clutch fluid is still right up to the top so none is being lost through the master or slave cylinders. Anyway going in next week to be fixed - I hope! I would do the lot while box out. When slave cylinder went on my SE I had an Indy change slave, dmf and clutch cost £700 all in. 2014 SE Loire Blue SD4 Auto (MY15)

Try to bleed your clutch first. Air in the system can cause this. It is an 11mm bleeding nipple on the gearbox, you can reach it from above. Make sure your brake fluid is topped up properly - mine 2007 mod is a bit sensitive to this.

This same thing happened to me this morning. Clutch pedal did not return. Just after start up then was ok aftrr that.
Amyone found out definitive cause for this. I'm in the last two weeks of my warranty period.

If you are in the last throws of the warranty, get it in now, if you raise the problem now and it fails in two months you will have a case, do nothing and it fails in two months your out of pocket.

So called the garage this morning and was told that they will have a look to see what the problem is but that the warranty doesn't include any clutch components!!

Relavant background info is that the gearbox failed and was replaced with a recon unit about six weeks ago under warrantty by the garage.

Looking at details of the clutch system in the workshop manual, it seems that the slave cylinder and thrust bearing are one piece(?) and inside/part of the gearbox. Would these have been replaced as part of or when the gearbox was done? I'm wondering what connection there could be with the recent replacement of the gearbox.

Cause of this problem from internet searches ranges from air in the system, master cylinder failure, slave cylinder failure (which means gearbox out so much $$$)

Any comments appreciated so I can be prepared when talking to the garage

Have just collected my car from the independent dealer I bought it from, following a full service, MOT and wait for it...................Yes, your right, the DMF, clutch and slave cylinder had to be replaced! My sticking pedal was the slave cylinder, but everything else was knackered too!!!! This after just 39,000 miles - am not impressed.
However, on the bright side the knocking sound on tick over has gone and the clutch pedal works a treat!
