Recently I had an issue where the power steering fluid level dropped below minimum. The dealer did a pressure test and found that there was no leak. It has been 2 weeks and over the last 3 days i have noticed the level dropping down to mid way between max and min. I check the level every morning before starting the engine. I doubt this is a norm. Will be bringing it in for another check next week

PSF level should not be below the "minimum" level.

PSF level will be low if the vehicle has stood for any length of time and the engine has gone cold e.g. overnight.

Simple test: go and look at the level first thing in the morning after the vehicle has stood overnight - take a note of level. Then go and start the engine and let it tick over for 5 mins. Now go and take another look at the level. If all is normal the level reading should be higher than your first reading. This is due to the expansion of the oil's molecules under pressure/heat.

If when engine cold the level is below the minimum just top it up a little to around the mid range mark between min and max. Never top it up to max when cold. If the level constantly falls below the minimum mark when cold after topping up get the system checked for leaks.

thanks for the info but the level was at max in the mornings and it was only the last few days that it dropped. Thre variance cant be that much over a degree C ?

Then get the system checked professionally.

just an update on my post. The agent replaced my steering rack. One month later, the PSF level is slightly mid-way between max and min. Seems a bit fast for the level to drop.

Checks on the PSF level is done in the morning and car is parked in the same place with wheels straight.

Now the car is back at the agent and there seems to be no reason for the diminishing PSF besides evaoporation!!

Just an update again. Since a top up of the brake fluid on 3 June by the dealer, the level is now down to 1/3rd above minimum mark and the car is back at the dealer. Steering also felt heavier.

Dealer informs me that they have not be able to find the fault or leak and is waiting for Land Rover UK for a reply.

I am now on my 3rd steering rack and that was done end Nov and power steering fluid was topped up. Before the new year, I checked and it was down a 3rd. I jsut spoke with the dealer - technical consultant and was told that it is a norm for freelanders to have the power steering fluid loss and the dealers always top up when the car is serviced. He says that this has been the case since 2007.
Can other owners confirm they experience this and also how often is the power steering fluid topped up

Am I the only person here who gets extremely angry when they hear about dealers saying "it's normal" when in fact it definitely isn't and they're simply trying to get out of a warranty claim?

If the power steering fluid level is going down, then it's leaking somewhere. Simple as that.

As said above the steering does not use fluid so must be leaking!

Ask for an explanation of how \ where the power steering fluid gets 'used up'.

The only time I've put fluid into my power steering reservoir was when i changed the reservoir. And the level hasn't dropped since.

The dealer is giving a right porky of advice. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Will be meeting them next week to check on leaks. Will keep the forum updated. One temporary consolation is that I still have one year more on warranty
