No it's definitely coming from that area because when I lift the back box with my foot and jiggle it the noise appears. |

There's a long recent thread on this - try a search. Otherwise the most likely is an underbody heat shield, especially if you've been off-road. |

Yep you're right just been under and rear heat shield hanging off, totally corroded on all 6 nuts.

I assume it's there for a reason! That said, the shields on my last one were pretty bent and I didn't notice any problems. I suppose it depends what they are shielding. Can't be too expensive to replace surely? |

No the area that gets bolted is almost totally gone and not enough material to use washer on 5 out of 6 anchor points.
