Don't know if anyone is interested, I came across this on a coal mining forum. Years ago diesels engines were tested and ran on pulverised coal. A couple of links below. Maybe when oil runs out it will be common practice to run cars on coal?

Pulverised coal is said to burn cleaner than diesel, might not need a DPF? Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

I used to live near Didcot power station - that ran on pulverised coal. I wouldn't want to be downwind of what came out of the smoke stack there.

Coal burns much cleaner than any oil, but has a much higher ash content. So oxides of sulphur and nitrogen would be much lower, but your exhaust wouldn't look too clean.
