A cautionary tale

Hi Folks,
A word of warning!!!!
On Sunday I was fishing on the Central Plateau, it was a lovely day apart from the wind. I returned to the car for a cup of tea and a rest having just walked for about 6 ks in search of the elusive trout.
I only opened the tailgate for some reason with the button, whilst having a cupper my attention was caught by some movement in the water nearby I closed the tailgate and went to investigate. On returning to the car I was flabberghasted to find that the car was totaly locked.
I now know that if only the tailgate is unlocked when closed again it automaticley locks it self.
Being in a very remote area I fully expected to have to walk out to Liaweeni some 20 ks away in my wadders and shirt sleeves as all my other gear was in the locked car. It was 4:30 and I was very concerned for my wellbeing.
Cutting a long story short all ended well as after walking about 6 ks I was very fortunate to get a lift and all ended well.
I am now persuing the matter with Land Rover as I consider that being able to lock the keys in the car in such a manner is totaly unacceptable.
Roger

The Audis that my wife and I have owned in the past have similar features. The alarm fitted to my old Impreza by Subaru UK had lots of automatic locking options that allowed you to lock your car keys inside the car - even if they were still in the ignition!

I thought the one on the Freelander was supposed to recognise the keys were in the car and not lock it - not that I'd want to risk it and it certainly didn't do that in your case. Glad it didn't end up too bad for you.

Lockout nob.

Agree with you totally Spitzstick - early on in my Freely2 owning career I unlocked the tailgate, set my keys on the parcel shelf when I was loading the car and as it was pouring with rain I closed the boot. Nearest spare key was 90 miles away - oh what cretin of high accomplishment could have designed such intense cretinosity! That button on the fob should be marked "Lock yourself out of the car nob". I have never used that tailgate button since. In gather that the new key fob does not allow you to lock yourself out in that way - hurrah!
Many car manufacturers are equally silly about keys - I particulary hate that feature on my Hondas which gives you only a few seconds to open the car door before the twit who designed it decides that you are not going to be allowed to open the door at your own pace and he automatically locks you out until you find the key again and beg to be allowed to get into your own car within the dictated time limit - grrrrrrrrrrr.

The thing is, once you're aware of it it's a useful feature. You can just go to the car, open the back, chuck in whatever you will, shut the tailgate and walk off. No fiddling around locking it again. But you do need to know not to put the keys down in the car when you do it.

Years ago my brother had a Subaru which allowed you to set a pin code using the driver's door handle. (Seriously!) You could then unlock the car by tapping out the pin code using the handle. Perhaps not that secure, but useful in a lock-in scenario!

The simplicity of locking your keys in your FL2 is reported elsewhere on this forum so you are not alone.
.
May I reccomend that you buy a key blade from your dealer, put it in a plastic bag and hide it somewhere in/on the car where only you know it exists.
.
There are places where you might need a small screwdriver or penknife to remove somthing to hide and later retrieve it.
.
Hope this helps someone.
.
Kind regards from Fred

One of the reasons why I attach my key fob to a carabiner /Lanyard on my belt .If I also drop it or my hands are full, it just dangles there. Thumbs Up Audi,Merc,VW,Porsche,BMW and Opel. When it comes to going 4x4 they are all limited.(about 2 inches of snow or mud). Wink

Yes Fred I'm in my 54th year of driving and have never been locked out of a car before and have always had a key secreted somewhere on the car, and never had to use it!!
Was under the impression that this could'nt happen. I can't find in the book were it says to be aware of this happening.

Been there done that! Cost me nearly £200 to return home and collect the spare with my '07 plate. MY2013 won't let you do it because it does know where the key is. I have tried it (with the spare to hand!). Good idea to have a spare blade cut, but do make sure the lock is regurlarly lubed. That was my downfall as the lock was unpickable. 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red
