Going into limp mode

Every third or fourth day, and on second or third start, my 2009 2.2 TD would go into limp mode. From the dash lights I can see that the charge light stays on for a while. It is then that the car can only move very slowly. As soon as the light goes out, the car is fine.

Any pointers as to what the problem can be? Is the alternator not up to scratch, maybe?

Will just be stabbing in the dark, you need someone with a Fault Reader, to get the codes stored and go from there.

The problem is still there but less so.
I took it to an indie and after the diagnostics, he informed me that the engine ECU got some water into it and that it can be rectified by unplugging it and clean or dry the contacts with a squirt of WD 40 or Q 20.
I had not had time to do this yet, but as I say it is a bit better.
Where is this ECU located and can one do it yourself?
