I'm just about to install a DR500HD-GW into my FL2. Whereabouts do you guys site yours? I have the rain sensors / big plastic cowling around my rear view mirror which means it has go beneath the cowling if I want it central. I'm just a bit worried that it will be easily seen / nicked there...

Will be very interested to hear how you get on with this unit, as it is the one that I have short listed to install into mine. It looks just the ticket, with the advantage of a rear camera running simultaneously. Let me know how you go, and once it's installed, pop some pics up so we can see how obtrusive (or not, as the case may be) the unit actually is when in situ.

I sneakily recorded my car getting serviced to see that they did what they should have done and they didn't spot it until later in the day!

I think you're talking about the DR550HD-GW? I went for the 500, which is the single camera. In my view the 550 is not mature enough yet - the problem is the low recording bitrate used, resulting in pixellated, blocky pictures - particularly on moving details like trees and bushes at the sides of roads. The 500 uses almost double the bitrate (with its latest firmware) and has an excellent recording quality. The 550's crippled bitrate is probably to do with recording two feeds at the same time and doesn't look like it'll be fixed by a firmware upgrade anytime soon. It's just too much money to pay for a compromise. I do however want to get a dual camera option eventually but I'll make do with the single cam 500 until the technology matures - I'll just sell the 500 on when the time comes or put it in our other car. I will put up some pics when it's done |

Yours must be quite off-centre then? Is that an issue? |

Thanks for the pics - that's really helpful I guess the drawback of putting it there is that it's really visible to the passenger? Again, is it an issue being that off-centre? |

Not at all le bouch. As long as the front of the car is visible from both sides in case of an accident, then it's fine. The camera is very wide angled anyway as my YouTube video above shows.

I'm going to hardwire mine too, via one of those smart power thingies. Did you cut the plug off and properly hardwire yours or use a cig-socket type thing? |

I'm thinking of getting the Blackvue dr500gw-hd. Does anyone who already has one regret buying it and wish they have gone for something different?

I properly hard wired it into the fuse box behind the glove box.

I got mine at blackvue.eu I wouldn't risk getting one at a non-authorised re-seller in case of warranty problems. |

Smart thingy doesn't always work. Hadn't driven my FL2 for a week, went out Monday evening to be presented with a click and a low voltage warning and it didn't even try to turn over. |
