2011 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Ipanema Sand

tow bar fitting price

Had a quote for fitting a fixed towbar with twin electrics for £370. The company has been around a long time and they fitted one to my volvo ten years ago no problem.
Is there anything I need to watch out for? Seems cheap to me.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Ensure dedicated Land Rover electrics are fitted otherwise this could invalidate warranty.

It will only invalidate the warranty if you have a problem that LR can link to the fitting of the Towbar and associated wiring, this would also have to be proved, the onus is on LR/Dealer to prove it.

You need to be sure that the electrics kit is the 'proper' one that plugs into a socket in the spare wheel well - not one of those cowboy jobs where they splice into the wires behind the light fittings!

For comparison, I fitted a towbar myself last year. Parts prices (from eBay) as follows:
Witter towbar: £80
Britpart twin electrics kit: £120
Total cost: £200 plus about 2 hours work.

If you have reversing sensors fitted (I don't) you need to have someone tell the on-board computer that you have a towbar fitted so it disables the sensors when you're towing.

That's what I plan to do - thanks for the insight, Tim.

I know you said you don't have reversing sensors (I do!) but I wondered if you know whether the coding is vital, i.e. does it only disable the sensors whilst in reverse, or do the electrics not work at all until it's coded?

Depends what you want, the sensors will only be a pain when you select reverse, the higher spec models with Front and Rear Sensors you will have a button on the dash to turn them off, but only till the next time you select reverse.
You won't have the Indicator warning light in the display, so you will have to have the kit with either audible bleep of run wires to the dash for a separate warning light. If you have a manual Freelander it's not so bad, if you have an Auto the LR Kit will change the settings on the Gearbox, so the gear changes will be different, sort of puts it in to Sport Mode.

It has been said that the MY13 model will not need coding, it's just plug and play.

I've been told by the dealer mine won't need coding as the latest ones don't have an additional ecu...

I'll find out when I get it to bits in a couple of weekends time!

If you chassis number has a "D" as the tenth letter, then there is no re-coding.

I'm about to fit a bar with genuine LR wiring. My local independant (DAS in Horley) has quoted a reasonable £45 to recode.

Sorry to be a nuisance guys, but regarding parking sensors. They only become active when reverse is selected.
As it can be safely assumed I wont be reversing very far while towing, would I still need to get the car re coded ?
