What is the state of your tyres? 4WD, TR, or anything else you may have are useless if you have crap tyres, or the wrong ones.

Operator error.

Well, I tried all sections of the TR, TC on and off, revs from tickover to much more and still no joy. I managed to reverse back onto the gravel track, get a run up and go again but it really was like driving on ice. I too suspect the tyres. Road tyres with tread that is legal but not great. I will be getting new tyres in a few months time but I will stick to road tyres - not really worth getting anything for off road as I won't be doing that again - at least on a muddy grass field!

Operator tightwad error! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

Letting the tyres down helps a lot as well. You have to go down to as low as 15psi on some surfaces like muddy clay to get any traction at all no matter what 4wd you are in. The FL2 is an excellent car off road if you know what you are doing...but that applies to all 4wds.

2011 Freelander 2 SD4 GS Auto Fuji White

I had an opportunity to test the traction of our FL2 last month when visiting a friend last month.

The options were to park on a street about 5 minutes walk away or to park right out side his house via a completely saturated grass field.

Even in normal wet weather, he and his neighbour would park up on the grass but with in the recent downpours I was warned not to attempt it because more than a handful of cars had had to be rescued that day.

There was a fair amount of wheel spin, but in GGS mode and with a bit of dumb luck, our FL2 on original wrangler AW tyres with 25k miles on them coped just fine.

thats a pointless test, both cars had got speed up before hitting the field. engaging low gear was pointless, keep in high and get max speed on while your on good ground .
They should have stopped in the boggy patch and seen which car could restart At work

4WD wont do much if the tyres are worn down or just not suitable for off road use, there has to be something for the drive to be able to grip with.
Folk have all these gadgets on the car these days and think they are safe from every eventuality, like traction control and anti lock braking, Im ok I can drive normally attitude my car wont skid, but nothing will work on black ice say where theres no grip whatsoever for anything to work.
But if you have suitable tyres like say studded like they do abroad for the specific purpose then it might work.
Why do the proper Land Rovers have chunky tyres, so they can go off road and grip, Tesco carpark off road tyres arent much good for similar situations
