I bought a dealer warranty for £500 for 2 years cover. Pondered at the time whether I wasting my money! then a month later I had a clutch and flywheel replaced which would have cost £800 or more. so its already paid for itself. Its peace of mind from my point of view. |

Quite prepared to stand to be corrected, but I don't believe that a motor trader is obliged to supply any kind of warranty. Anything they choose to provide (at whatever price/bundled in the price of the car) is entirely voluntary.

When I bought my last discovery the dealer only gave me 30 days and the freelander I bought in December from a main dealer had no warranty I had to buy the RAC warranty that they offered me |

When I traded in a low value Peugeot 406 (~ £800) the independent dealer was reluctant to take it as allegedly any buyer has a statutory 6 month warranty, which could of course have left him very out of pocket. Might have been lies but he took it in the end and didn't try to knock me down any more than was reasonable on the trade in price. That was 10 yrs ago or so though so things might have changed.

I ran an SE on both, 104's replacements which tended to wallow, compared to 108's.

Bought a Suzuki Swift for my wife from a Garage and asked about the Warranty. He said that by law now any faults are covered for 6 months. He did not give us a written warranty but just said that we had 6 months according to law.About 4 months later we had a problem and he picked up the car, repaired it and brought it back with no charge. This is the reason that lots of cars are not being taken in part exchange and are being scrapped as the dealers cannot afford to repair them.
