I thought I'd start a thread to document the modifications I'm doing to the new Freelander.

The plan is as follows:

1) GVIF interface with Raspberry Pi Media Centre
2) Reversing Camera
3) Audio + Video out from iPod/iPad/iPhone
4) Amateur Radio Installation
5) 230V inverter
6) Integration with second radio where needed for HF.

So, the iniital shopping list:

GVIF Interface + Reversing Camera module from hids4u.co.uk
GVIF cable from NavVideo in the US (going to take a while to arrive)
Additional hardware from ram-mount.co.uk to mount the radio head units along with the stuff I already have.
Aluminium plate to mount radio hardware under the passenger seat
iPod video + audio out cable + lightning adaptor for newer phones.
2x Antenna mounts for the roof bars + cables
Random bits of wire to connect it all

Already got:
Kenwood TM-D710 Radio
300W inverter
Ram-mount arm and X-mount for iPhone

Once this is all installed, I should have the capabilty to take video + audio from either the Raspberry pi or iPod to the central display + reversing camera, as well as a permanently installed VHF/UHF radio, and capacity for my transportable hF radio to be run out of the car either powered by the battery or by a 230V generator.

Good luck with the camera install, I did mine in the middle of summer and it nearly killed me, but a worth while job.
The only thing I wish was my camera to have markers on it, but you soon work out how far you can reverse up to objects.

I bought a camera for the last car and never fitted it when I realised how much work it would be. This has been planned to do all the install work in one go and run antenna cables and everything else in one go.

Phase 2 Completed. Antenna mounts installed. Cables all run as far as the rear battery box.

I'm deliberately doing this piecemeal to avoid rushing and breaking things.

I need to tidy up how the external antenna wiring is held in place. Currently just held down with red insulation tape, but still might need to tweak stuff (one thing I don't know is whether I will need an earth strap to the antenna mounts, and until I know that I'm not finalising it.

Took a bit of work to figure out the best way into the tailgate to avoid the wiring being crushed against the sharp edges under the seal. Will take some pictires of the cable run later.

Wiring from camera follows the wiring room to the headlining - was just able to get the cable in place without removing the headlining with judicious use of an coat hanger, some very long nosed pliers, and a lot of head scratching.

The next stage starts at the front running radio power cables back from the engine bay. And for that I need another little shopping trip to get some suitable cable. 2011 MY SD4 HSE + planning some interesting stuff

The weather is currently delaying the final bit of this project. Thanks to the photos on here I think I have all the necessary cable runs figured out.

I have the GVIF cable from NAV Video now - possibly the most expensive foot long cable I've seen since £200 for a 1980 HD SCSI cable. £65 for cable + shipping and a further £21 for VAT + import duty! I also have most of the expected crimp terminals and other bits I'm going to need, and the sun is trying to break out. So, my tip today on getting power through the bulkead.

Remove glovebox, and tuck the fabric layer behind out of the way. To the left, about half way down (on RHD model), you'll see the cable for the bonnet release go through in a grommet. This comes out in the space at the left of the battery (or the right when you look from the front of the vehicle.

With a bit of fiddling you can get a coathanger through there and into the battery box, and then it was easy enough to run more cables. I wanted to run 2x power and earth cables (one 6mm2 and one 2.5mm2), plus a 10mm2 +ve with return via the chassis. So I pulled the existing grommet back down the release cable, and cut a suitable sized grommet and fed it in around all the cables once they were in place.

I run a jump lead from the battery negative terminal to a bolt in the engine bay, then disconnected the main earth strap to connect the negative leads there, and then with care put the +ve fuses onto the studs on the positive terminal. With a bit of care I was able to hold the existing terminals down and not break the power to the car.

From there, removing the door seals at the bottom, pulling out the trim along there, and running cables fore and aft means I now have 3x power feeds under the seats, plus an antenna feed from the back of the car along with the video + reverse signal from the camera.

Next part is to mount the radio, GVIF, and inverter under the seats. I'm thinking the inverter will go under the passenger seat, and the rest under the drivers seat - with space for a Raspberry Pi somewhere as well... 2011 MY SD4 HSE + planning some interesting stuff

Well, after most of today spent leaning at awkward angles, most of the installation work is done.

It doesn't work, but that's a different matter.

There's a problem with the antenna feed for the radio as it's not picking anything up, and I still need to install the GPS to feed it, and I damaged the connector on the end of the feed from the reversing camera so I need to replace that.

I also ddin't install the inverter properly - I was just bored of working at awkward angles all day!

I don't think either problem will involve rocket science to resolve, just some patience!

The good thing is that removing the trim along the floor and lifting and replacing seats wasn't difficult, just time consuming. 2011 MY SD4 HSE + planning some interesting stuff

great read, I have a wireless reverse camera system to fit and front +ve connection wasn't obvious, cheers.
