What is a fair price?

I have first refusal on a 2009 (59) HSE Auto being sold by a neighbour due to bereavement. It is 47,200 miles, FLRSH, local reg, full HSE spec, Lago Grey with Black leather. It has Memory seat, DAB Radio/CD, Leather wheel, spoiler, colour coded handles and sills, factory detachable tow bar, full size alloy spare, rubber mats and boot mat. It looks unmarked but for a small (20mm) split in side of driver's seat and seat belt wear on driver's B pillar. P Zeros all round, Full MOT. WBAC says £16,015. What is a fair price to offer? (apart from as little as possible).

My present car has over 102,000 miles and has not let me down. However, I need a reliable tow car and do around 12k pa. WBAC prices this at £8,330 without having seen 100k of stone chips.

I'd say pay the WBAC price. Show them the valuation and remind them that they won't actually get that as they always knock you down on the day plus charge an administration fee. They could get more privately but then again they could probably do without the hassle after a bereavement. It would be the easiest option for them.

Reminds me of the old joke about the Jewish guy who died and his wife wanted to announce his passing to the local community. Trying to get the best price in the local paper she was told that the minimum number of words for a death announcement was five. She wrote "Abe's dead. Volvo for sale". Yeah, wasn't funny years ago either! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

I would probably agree with SteveD, offer the WBAC quotation, do not think you would go wrong with this advice!

I would expect that on a trade in, Reeventu. I guess they put it on the forecourt at £19,995 minimum. 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)

Thanks Steve & topaz. It does look like the WBAC price is about right. Similar cars at dealers are IRO 18,995 to 19,995.

If it helps you, I sold an 09 HSE Auto with 54000 miles for 15100 privately 2 months ago. Trade only seemed to want to pay 14000 ish (I had 10 offers at that price) and I paid 16400 from a main dealer 4 months earlier. I think 16000 as a private buy is a good deal for both of you and a fair offer.

Very helpful, thank you Labradorslave, that looks to be as close a comparison as I am likely to get! Thumbs Up 10MY (Sept 09) TD4 HSE Auto in Stornoway Grey (Now Gone)
