Odd smell at the rear like cooked brake or burning clutch, Ambient temp 6 deg C distance driven after a 10 mile 1hr stop 10 mile drive Brakes all cold to touch. car is auto. reported to dealer whose advice was call LR assist if it happens again. As you're still under warranty, just book it in at your dealer for investigation, never mind LR assist, that's not the answer. Don't forget to request a loan car too  Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

I sometimes get this, sometimes don't, can't replicate under a set of circumstances so just something I'm keeping my eye on. Wondered if it was crap on the rear exhaust back box. 2013 FL2 - Black Edition Auto

Could be the DPF regenerating.

Maybe intermittently sticking brake shoes or pads ?

I had exactly the same with mine the other day, which is what made me think of it.
Strange regarding mine, as I had just completed a 90ish mile journey all on A roads, and latterly a single track mountain road, then a long steep downhill of about a mile, and I could then smell the dpf regenerating at the bottom.

Thanks guys, the odd thing is that there was steam coming off all the tyres, though not hot or warm to touch, same thing this morning on the way out, but not on the way back dropped 0.3 mpg going out which is unusual going out as it is normally a gain of 0.1 but gained 0.1 on the way back, so regen would account for that. May have a problem with Service Manager as I wasn't to impressed with his attitude to the recall as I hadn't had a letter, demanded to know how I knew and gave some story about access to the LR data base. my PC is slightly to the right of Genghis

To identify the DPF regen, if you reset the trip computer daily for a while you will get an idea of your daily MPG.
If one day you get the smell again then the average mpg reading will nosedive dramatically as extra fuel is pumped into the DPF to start and engage the 'burn'.

So if poor mpg links with smell on a given day you will know what it is and stop worrying about it.

If those elements don't coincide but you have the smell go to a rear wheel and (if your alloys allow), put your hand inside to reach the central drum and not the disc. If one drum is hotter that the other you've identified a sticking handbrake.

It is most likely the DPF and therefore nothing to worry about. I have only been aware of a DPF regen once in 2.5 years and that was because I stopped to pick someone up and the car filled with a horrible smell when the door was opened - rotten eggs and burning.

It regenerates on avererage every 350 miles (normal driving) but who knows what that means - better ask The Doctor he knows about such things. Taking the car out for a run in the hope of clearing the DPF is a waste of fuel as you have no way of knowing where it is in the cycle and it may start regenerating 1 minute before you stop, in which case you wont get a Regen and it will do it next time you drive. The old DPFs (pre MY11 and mostly fitted to exports) were a problem, but the MY11 and newer don't seem to generate (no pun intended) many adverse posts. Infact I never it give it a thought. Well except for tonight.
