Yes true, mine was a bit grubby thought that I didn't have one at first glance. Maybe someone else might have the answer.

The Peugeot 2.2 diesel is used in a number of different vehicles and some of them have "push fit" engine covers which clip onto these nipples. John

Just been out to have a look at my fathers 2010, it has these "nipples" too.

I'd agree with JST as well. If you take the LR cover off the engine you'll find 'nipples' fitted and used by the cover in the Freelander in a 'ball and socket' style fixing. I guess the same engine in a different vehicle will have a different shape to the cover and use different 'nipples' as required to hold it in place. 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red
