Photo software for Mac

Now that I have my new Nikon P520 camera, I am wondering what the best software is to use. I don't have additional hard drives for my MacBook Pro so I need to avoid anything that will slow the computer right down.

Never used these programs so what can you achieve with them? I am as far removed from a skilled photographer as it's possible to be Laughing LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I've heard good things about the mac 'Aperture' software but not used it myself. iPhoto has always worked well for me, anything ever edited and printed always came out really well.

iPhoto does pretty much for everyday use - level adjustment, red eye reduction, retouching, cropping etc. I still have Photoshop but find myself rarely using it.

I'm the same. iPhoto is often quicker for normal edits

I must say I have used iPhoto and some of its features. I just wondered if there were any benefits to other programs. Perhaps for an amateur photographer like me, iPhoto will be plenty. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I useAperture for nearly all my photographs and it is like using a mini Photoshop. it can be used by

novices and will give you more control than the basic iphoto.

Aperture for whole image management.

If you don't have deep pockets, Acorn is a very good editor for getting deeper into images and tweaking stuff.

I also have PortraitPro and SnapHeal for fixing specific stuff.

The whole lot came to about £100 over time...

I use iPhoto for basic stuff and Photoshop Elements for more adventurous stuff. You can download most Adobe products for free for a trial period:

You can download gimp for the mac. No I'm not taking the Micky. Gimp is freeware and is very much like Photoshop, works on layers and has very good photo editing capability. If you have used photoshop then this is the next best thing for free. I think the site is gimp.org to download.
