Auto Box problem? Thirsty Freelander...

Any thoughts on the following?
I have a Freelander 2 auto with 56,000 miles. Not used off road or abused.

Over the last couple of months or so I have noted a light metalic rattle on right hand cornering. Over last few days the car feels to be "holding back" and the fuel economy has fallen quite notably.

Obviously something is binding somewhere....

Knocking car out of gear when rolling allows it to roll gently to a halt. When driving the nose of the car seems to lift more when accelerating, making me think something is binding in the transmission.

Anyone had any similar issues?

Could be binding brakes. Check both brake disc temperatures at the front, very carefully!, next time you are out for a run. They will be warm from stopping but if one side is hotter than the other it could indicate brake binding.
