ED4 Off Road

Done not a bad job, most likely due to the vehicle being kept in momentum

I've got the ed4 and have tried it on some moderate off-road tracks and must say it does cope very well.
Lr have done a good job the only time it struggles is with sloppy mud.
It certainly copes with the terrain most people would need to cross.

Do you really think Land Rover would risk their reputation by producing a vehicle that can't cope with moderate off road conditions?

2 wheel drive it may be but it is still a Land Rover and is still badged as a Freelander. Even the eD4 is designed to have some off road capability.

I bet M&S tyres would help on any FWD car

I went for the ed4 as I really only need the ground clearance a lr gives. After a few test drives I found the ed4 was a much better drive on road and still performed on dirt tracks and bumpy ground. Also it saved me a bit of cash on the purchase price, saves me some with the better fuel economy and the way I see it there can only be less to go wrong.
I have to agree a 2wd with the right tyres won't be too far behind a 4wd.
I had a disco3 a while back and to be honest it was never driven anywhere a 2wd couldn't go.
For me the only downside with the ed4 is the fact a few have asked why I didn't buy a proper lr!

United Kingdom 2007 Freelander 2 TD4 HSE Manual Stornoway Grey

A friend of mine used to work for a well known weekly car magazine. Last year they did a feature on the 2WD Freelander head to head on an off road course with a 4wd X3, Q5 Quattro, Vauxhall Antara 4x4, Rav 4x4, X-Trail 4x4, and the Kuga 4x4.

The idea was to see how a LR 2WD coped against the 4 wheel drive competition.

The Freelander 2wd got round more of the course than any of the 4 wheel drive competition. The nearest car to the Freelander was the Vauxhall Antara which they rated off road very well indeed.

But the story was shelved and not published as BMW allegedly through their toys out of the pram that their X3 suffered against a 2wd Land Rover.

The Q5 didn't fair much better either. But my experience has shown that the BMW X3, X5 and X6 are shocking when it comes to difficult conditions.

My old neighbour used to get really Censored off in the snow when I could drive out of our cul de sac without and hassle at all, and her X3 just got all confused and didn't know what to do and went know where! Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Why should an article get shelved because a company might not like how one of their products performs against the competition? 2016 BMW X3 30d SE in red

I did consider buying a q5. Now I know why the guy in the audi dealer told me I wasn't to take it off road on my test drive.

Didn't Autocar test the ed4 when it first came out and decide that it was nearly as capable as the 4wd version unless extreme off roading(which you probably would not do in a Freelander anyway)? I think Steve Cropley wrote the article

All magazines write many stories and there are quite a few that don't get published for one reason or another.

But e fact is, the Q5 and X3 are Censored are anything other than wet roads.

Hey get praised for there on road handling but hat is there downfall when I comes to off road or snow mud use. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Sirmik, your gonna hate me for this, but after watching the video, all it proves is the Kia driver is slightly worse re driving ability than the LR driver, nothing to do with a vehicle comparison IMHO.
