Strange / difficult haldex / rear diff fault

I put my 2009 MY auto in to a non franchise gearbox specialist company about 6 weeks ago to the have the noisy rear diff bearing sorted. All seemed OK and when I picked it up I was told I'd have a few clunks from the rear axle for a little while until the new oil had circulated but that was usual.
When it was still clunking a few days later and it felt as if I had no rear diff when turning sharply or reversing into a parking space I took it back.
The garage eventually said there was now a fault with the Haldex unit and after a week of trying various things said the Haldex ECU was at fault and they sent it away for specialist repair. The specialist repair company said it was beyond repair and was "burnt out" so they did a "fix" on the ECU unit to get the car working in 2WD and sent it back.
The gearbox company refitted it and it made no difference, they believe it had"burnt out" again! They now think that a fault elsewhere may be causing the fault with the Haldex ECU but they are really just clutching at straws and I don't think they really know where to look next.
Any ideas?

PS it's a Gen 4 Haldex unit

I'm no gearbox expert, but that doesn't sound usual to me! Particularly given that the FL2's rear diff is not limited slip.

The Haldex unit is mounted on the front of the diff and needs to be removed to get at the diff bearing. A fault now in the Haldex sounds like more than coincidence - one has to wonder if it got damaged during the diff fix.

My thoughts as well pab, seems too much of a coincidence, have never had any trouble with the transmission before. Really want to get it sorted now even if it means a new Haldex & ECU.

The car is going to a landrover dealer on Tuesday 26th for more diagnostic tests, if it needs a new Haldex it will need to be a generation 4 complete with its electronic control module, if that's what you have can you give me a price please?

Rear diff/ haldex fault

Hi,,

I am experiencing exactly the same issues. Rear diff main bearing was changed by an independant garage and now I have a judder on full lock when parking or reversing, also when I pull away from a junction on lock.

The garage are struggling to find a resolution and suggested a tyre issue which I do not believe. Both tyres are the same make and are within 1mm of each other in terms of wear. I would be really interested to know how you managed to cure the fault, if indeed your were successfull.

Hi Dean & Jacques

After trying pretty much everything they could think of the garage pretty much gave up so I arranged to take it into a Landrover main dealer for a diagnostic test.

The test (」79) came back as a fault on the Haldex pump and the dealer quoted me 」550+ for it to be replaced without any guarantees that a new pump was the final cure.

Rather than just replace the pump I took the car from the main dealer and bought a complete replacement Haldex unit from Mercuryskies above at almost half the price that the main dealer quoted for just the pump.

The garage that did the diff bearing fitted the replacement Haldex unit and I took it back to the Landrover main dealer to have the Haldex unit ECU reprogrammed (another 」79).

Was I pleased or what when I picked the car up from the main dealer, everything now working perfectly and no noises or any juddering from the car, just like new.

In the end the diff bearing, the Haldex unit and the testing and reprogramming costs me a total of 」800.

Given the ball-ache and money that you have had to shell out to THREE different businesses, surely it would have been more cost effective to have put it in to a proper Dealer in the first place? Hard lesson learned there methinks...glad you got it sorted eventually though. Foraging near Gaydon....

Thanks for they reply Bob it pretty much confirms my worries, the car is getting picked up Tuesday for further diagnostics (I've just had the diff done). With a bit of luck it'll just need the pump replacing.

What was the result by the way? Mine has now had the AWD disabled over christmas,so I can use it but I suspect it will require some further work in the New Year.

Morning Dean,

Nothing to report as of yet. I took the car into an indie who, for reasons best known to themselves agreed that there was a fault (I'd told them what I suspected it was) and brought the car back to me without further investigation!! I can only assume they don't want the work. I've since taken it to another garage who are going to look at it in the New Year and hopefully just sort it. I'm lucky in as much that I have other cars to drive over the Christmas period. I'll update in the New Year.

Jacques, I see you're in the North East so you might want to consider Team Valley Land Rover (on the Team Valley in Gateshead). They are a 'proper' Land Rover service centre, but they don't sell cars therefore don't try to cover the overheads of a sales operation from servicing, which is what most dealers do. As a result they're normally quite a bit cheaper than a dealer, although not as cheap as an indy. They are, however, very good (there are plenty on here who will back me up on that one!) and they will diagnose and fix the problem properly. Given some of the stories I've heard involving indies, diffs and Haldex failure I'd think twice about letting an indie loose on my diff/Haldex!

Thanks for that PAB, they were actually where I was heading for before I was recommended PVH Landrover in Stokesley. I spoke to PVH and without prompting they concurred what I suspect is the issue. If they cannot rectify I will however be taking a trip up the A1 to Gateshead. - Thanks for the recommendation though.
