Of all the countries I've ever visited, Ireland seems to have the least amount of speed enforcement. I tore it up on their highways, which are surprisingly modern, smooth and absolutely spectacular for high speed driving. I almost broke the needle off the speedometer of my rental Seat Altea on the southern stretch of the ride from Dublin to Cork.  CAR HISTORY

If you want to try no speed limit in a right hand drive car then the highway north of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, Australia is your spot. They have reintroduced the no speed limit as a 12 month trial this year after dropping it some time back. It is a single lane each way normal road through the bush with cows, camels and kangaroos wandering on to it at their leisure. I had the wife's VW Passat turbo up to 200kph on it a few years ago and it was a bit hairy to say the least so I dropped to around 130 very quickly. Two cars passing head on on a normal road at around 200kph is a close quarter 400kph whiz by...really, I think they are nuts up there for allowing it. Dual carriage way maybe, but single lane each way standard road with no divider? No way.

Turbo Dan - I have done that road, also in a hire car, after I got diverted into Dublin when Cork was snowed in. So I know exactly what you mean !!

As you say, the road is surprisingly fantastic which is due to the fact that it was funded by the European Union !! There are many such fantastic EU-funded roads in Europe, although I don't recall seeing any in the UK............................. FL2 HSE Auto Galway Green

Mike - I've driven that road too. Added interest from the road trains, which pull over to let you past and thereby create a quarter-mile cloud of impenetrable dust right across the highway. Not to mention the fact that the nearest hospital is probably a few hundred miles away - as is the nearest working emergency phone!

Mate you are lucky they pull over for you. There is nothing like trying to pass a road train with 4 trailers on it going at 100kph. They hit an undulation in the road and all of a sudden look like a giant snake slithering all over the place. A family was killed a while back passing one with a ute and a trailer on themselves. They literally got knocked off the road.

I'm a LR2 owner and I'm often driving to work by car. Setting up the speed limiter to 80 mph, the distance of 60 miles is ridden in less than an hour without any bigger security risks - except the inner city traffic (Frankfurt). The way back I'm raising the speed limiter often to 100 mph or more, also without any security risks.

Driving a Landrover in Germany is more a question of "style". For many people it is too tough looking and not enough "business like". Also it is a question of pricing compared to German types like BMW X5 or Mercedes Benz GLK for example which are often not as good as the LR off the roads, but German people who buy those upper priced cars mostly don't wanna use them really off the roads. They wanna have big, business like looking cars which are more secure (4wd) than others, where they are sitting in a better position and that go fast on the highways.
Also (sorry to say that, and not agreeing it ), most people don't trust English cars more than German ones. Sure, in my opinion they should, especially belonging to the great experiences of LR , but as I said, in the end they will never really use the possibilities given by the great experiences of LR. Plus all reasons above the LR is "not really needed" in Germany. But for me it's one of the most exciting cars these days

Oh, Entschuldigung.Herzlichen willkommen Chris. Audi,Merc,VW,Porsche,BMW and Opel.When it comes to going 4x4 they are all limited.(about 2 inches of snow or mud).

Could the unrestricted autobahn at Stuttgart have anything to do with the Porsche factory being there? Had one of my best holidays there when I had a 944 and went to the Porsche factory and museum. Just about maxd out on the speedo, but porker was as straight as a die and it was like being on rails. Younger then and my reaction times were much better. Wouldn't do it now, but at least it's one off my bucket list. Fantastic country by the way, and the people were brilliant. Would go back at the drop of a hat.

Another European country devoid of Land Rovers and especially FL2's is Ireland. Just back from their wonderful country with a return drive from Dublin to Newport Co Mayo and did not see one Irish plated FL2 - a few Brits touring though. MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.
