2007 freelander 2, 115,000 miles.

I'm a bit of a home mechanic so I always keep my cars up to scratch and then some!
So far I've replaced the AC condenser, all brake components and fully serviced the girl, replacing the fuel filter along the way.

I've also cleaned the turbo and EGR.. Massive difference in drivability by the way, highly recommend it!

The reason I replaced the brake discs and pads and replaced all 4 wheels and tyres (ok wheels and tyres were just because I wanted too but the wheel wobble helped persuade the misus) was because of this wheel wobble which only happens occasionally or whenever carrying 2 others. Or one other heavy person in the passenger front seat..

Can't really feel any wheel play when it's jacked up, but could it be suspension arms?

Anyone else had this?

Does it happen regardless of road surface?

Also describe how you feel the wobble. If you can feel it through the steering, then its most likely front related. If you feel it through the seat then most likely the rear.

Swap tyres front to back ... does the wobble follow the swap? ( I.e. points to wheel/tyre balance/wheel seating on hub )

Does it happen under acceleration? on steady speed? or on deceleration?



( My initial thought (but with no evidence to prove it) is that a wheel is not seated correctly on a hub )

Yup. hence the acceleration/overrun test.

It's intermittent.
Steady speeds of 50mph and around there.
Swapped wheels already
Even stuck new wheels and tyres on
New brake discs and pads
Seems to happen more with weight on board
And I can feel it through my feet on the drivers foot rest and through the steering wheel.

I've never had loose bushes translate into a resonant wobble personally, they show as knocking over bumps.

Based on what you've said, I'd now be thinking along Steve D's comments on propshafts. What have you messed around with. A universal joint on a shaft when on its way out tends to heat up under load. You could take it for a run, jump underneath and have a quick check of shaft joints and see if any are particularly hotter than the rest.

TBH i've not touched the drive shafts or prop at all, so if i take it for a drive, the hot one is the culprit?

what about a ball joint, oh no i suppose that would be constant wouldn't it.

When carrying weight, the car will sit lower. That will cause the propshaft and driveshafts to run at a different angle and the joints will be running in a different position. I'd practically rule out front outer joints as you'd expect to hear them under load on turns. Only way may be a strip down and physical examination of the joints. I'd start with the front inner ones. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

Today I gave it a proper drive and made it happen.
It's definitely shaking the steering wheel, and I can feel it in the seat so can the passenger. I then slowed down and did a full lock right turn back on myself and it was gone.

I checked all drive shafts for play, they all move in and out a minute amount as expected, but there is no real play laterally.. Or rotationaly.

So I checked the prop shaft running the centre of the car, should you be able to rotate it about an inch side to side, basically what I'd call play?

it turns out it was the rear brake shoes binding anyway. hope that helps
