Car storage advice

I have to go aboard for 6 months and would rather store the car than sell it.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice or tips for best practice for a Freelander 2. I have read (on this forum I think) that the car shuts down after 28 days of non-use. Would that mean I don’t have to disconnect the battery?

Any advice or tips would be most welcome.

I would probably disconnect the battery anyway, even though in principle you shouldn't need to. The most important thing is to make sure you can gain access via the passenger door (the one with the manual lock) as you will find the remote unlock inactive on your return and there's only the one door with a manual lock.

You might want to consider raising the car on axle stands to remove the risk of tyre deformation, but with modern tyres it's probably not an issue for 6 months.

Sorry Bornfree but I have no experience of storing for 6 months. If it were me I would disconnect the battery and charge before I try to start the car on return. I suppose you could leave it on a battery trickle charger such as a CTEK but 6 months is a long time.

I understand that tyres can deform if left in one position for too long, therefore taking the weight off them would be a good idea. However, the very best idea is to get someone to give it a run once a week. It's never good to leave a car for long periods.

I store my Astra for 6 months every year throughout the winter.

Don't go to any significant extremes. increase the tyre pressures by about 5psi as this will strengthen the side walls. Finally, I would invest in a cTek battery conditioner. These cost from around £50 and keep the battery topped up. These are designed to be used for months and months at a time.

I use one of these and it keeps the car from losing all power and the systems going haywire, which can happen when the battery goes flat.

If the car is being stored outside, then make sure the car has a good coat of polish and wax and all should be well. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Thanks for all the advice. We are having to move out of our flat, so won't have our own garage space and will likely have to rent one. The other option we have is to pay (quite a large amount) to store it with the RACQ (the AA of Queensland) and they check fluid levels and keep the car ticking over.

I'll report back in ~6 months with the option I went with and the results.

Thanks again.
