Is it a simple job to swap batteries? prise open case/ remove old/ fit new or is soldering involved?

Think i might call into see an auto eleccy - i know i'd make a mess of it

question - does the battery charge in the holder while the car is switched off or just when its running?
I was thinking if it's a constant charge when off i could leave it in the holder overnight (locked garage) - i only do 7 miles each way to work so not sure if this is enought to put charge in?
