Might go second hand, feels a bit like I shouldn't, but I think it might make a better investment in the long run

My best watches are a couple of Rotary one's. Peasant watches compared to the big names but nice anyway, particularly the square faced one. LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Rolex is said to be the Land Rover of watches so why bother about anything else?

Here is mine!

If "U Boat" means as in German submarines I think anyone buying one is sick!

I have noticed U boat watch displays in jewellers windows, but I only noticed them because they are H U G E! They just look so thick and heavy to me. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto
Evoque SD4 Dynamic Lux Auto
Present: Audi A3 S Line.

Nick,
Lot of sense talked here and Toeknee has hit the nail on the head with Rolex. I'd be more than upset to have spent several thousands only to discover that the movement cost less than 50 quid.
I see the watch you've seen is an 'Auto'.
Be aware that auto's don't keep good time like a quartz; they can loose several seconds per day. However, for a collector like myself, I absolutely love auto's. There are several grades of auto movements which have to meet standards of time keeping. A modern certified movement has to meet +6/-4 secs per day; a good movement will give better accuracy. We are talking about chronometer grade movements here. One of my chronometer watches keeps to approx 2 secs per day
and it's almost 40 years old. I've a '59 Bulova 10k rolled gold which looses about 5 secs per day.
Also, be aware that auto's don't take kindly to abuse. If you're about to do some work with a hammer, take your auto off and wear a cheap quartz.

Many auto movements are made in China and although some are decent, the watch will have a very poor resale value as mentioned in this thread.
If you're dead set on an auto, (the collectors must have), try to do some research into movements. There is loads of info online like 'adjusted to six positions' and what 'chronometer certified' means.

Spending the money wisely will give you satisfaction and hopefully your Grandads legacy can be passed down to your next generation in many years to come. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Some great deals can be found for some new Omegas at grey dealers such as
www.iconicwatches.co.uk &
www.swisswatchesdirect.co.uk

They (and others) are always worth a look if you fancy new - I can personally recommend Iconic - they are a bricks n mortar jewellers in Blackburn where you can collect if you prefer instead of doing a purely online purchase

If that is the style you prefer and you like Omegas then I would suggest you also have a look at a Speedmaster Professional (often called a Moonwatch or SpeedyPro). They are a great watch where the classic design has remained largely unchanged for over fifty years - they are popular for a reason. A twist is to get one which was manufactured or sold in your birth year. The link to the NASA lunar missions is kinda cool too. You can easily buy new or second hand (starting from about £1k). I have a lovely hand-wind, 1st gen moonwatch and it gets lots of wrist time. Although vintage, it is a good size and very usable.

Loads of info on the net for the faithfully SpeedyPro but wiki is a good starting point

Breitling Colt Chrono - been a great watch, replaced a Tudor chrono (made by Rolex)which I now wish i had not sold, have had an Omega Speedmaster- good watch but very large on my small wrist
But now looking at buying Rolex submariner- second hand- I know its personal choice and I accept some think overpriced but looking at data over past 10 years an 'appreciating' watch that looks a good investment as I get to wear a nice watch and my son will inherit a good watch whenever
whatever you buy Nick its 'personal' choice - but great second hand buys if you buy from reputable- ensures 'genuine' and a Guarantee 2011 XS,Sumatra Black, GONE MARCH 2014- RR Evoque Prestige 5 door ,MY 2014,Loire Blue, Silver Roof, Panoramic roof.

+1 for the Omega PO. There are 2 options for the case diameter size if the 45mm is a bit overpowering.

Just searched watch finder, no '73 build ones, but there is a '05 that's caught my eye

The year my son was born, which in my mind, it will mean more to him when he receives it
