Got to be the rear main oil seal I would think. Not good news I'm afraid - big job. Sad Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

On the basis that its engine oil and not autobox oil the the difficulty and 'big job' depends upon who does it and by what method.
Going to the end if the story first, if the engine was out and sitting in front of you then to extract and replace the seal is straightforward and inexpensive.
The question is who takes the engine out and how .
If you follow the LR method as described in Topix manual then best take a mortgage out to find the cash.
.
If you extract the engine my way leaving all major components still installed and connected then its 'easy' and straightforward.
.
There is a post around January 2013 by me listed I think as 'engine removal'; the engine comes out the top way very easy, you don't even undo the bonnet.
.
Pm me if you want to talk further.

Thanks lads.
It's a too big job for me. I have booked it in to RCV Paddock Wood next week.
Not very good at 29,000mls and four oil change's.

Just thinking.....somewhere at the back of the engine is the oil pipe that feeds the turbo centre bearing, might be a simple oil leak from the banjo joint.
If its the original thought of crank seal I do hope that the garage doesn't follow the official LR book method as they dismantle air con, power steering, brakes, drive shafts, prop shaft, auto box oil......the list goes on and on.
.
Kind regards from Fred

If it is the rear seal, they may not follow the official LR book method but I bet they'll charge the official LR time for doing it that way! Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

This has not been a good week. Start of the week Defender needs new DMF, fox kills three turkeys, two chickens and dog eats one of my new shoes. I am going to stay in bed next week. After shooting fox, dog, and selling Defender.

Just had the job done by RCV Kent and for what they did a very reasonable bill. I was expecting a hell of a lot more. They fitted a seal that turned out to be faulty so they had to do it all again.
As they started fitting a second seal they received a notification from JLR stating these seals have been superseded by one's that now work.
They ordered and received said seal, only to find it requires special fitting tool. This tool will be available in a few weeks.
The lads there made one and fitted the seal.
Am I unlucky with FL2?
So far. Constant vibration [sorry characterization of vehicle]
New torque converter
Two starter motors
Rear disc's
New key fob. All in 29,000mls.
