New Zealand LR hire/rental

I am planning a trip to NZ in April/May 2014. Looking to spend 6 to 8 weeks across both islands.

Question: do any of the Kiwi LR fans on this forum know where I can hire a Land Rover whilst I am in your magnificent country Question

I have spent some hours searching the internet for car hire Co's that rent Land or Range Rover but without success, therefore any help would be appreciated. Or, if a private individual has a LR vehicle and would not mind "lending" it to me in return for a mutually agreeable fee then do feel free to make a proposal Thumbs Up

United Kingdom 2013 Freelander 2 SD4 HSE Lux Auto Santorini Black

I found these people hire a RRS.
http://www.rentluxury.co.nz/index.html

It'll be very pricey I'd imagine. Probably cheaper to ship your car across! But what it pricey to some may be cheap/good value to others. (Like the shop staff that told Opera Winfrey that she couldn't afford a bag she was looking at)

Anyway, the majority of hire companies I have come across have a limit of 100Kms per day. Before charging a fee per KM after that. So worth bearing that in mind also.

Edit: I may be worth asking the LR dealers if they hire out or know anyone that does.

Thanks AiiEEX for the link. Appreciated.
I have sent them an enquiry with full details of the visit and driver data. I'll give you an update when they respond.

Also I've sent out an enquiry to the listed LR dealers on South Island - none show vehicle rental on their garage websites as far as I can discover, but, having said that I am the first to admit that I am probably the world's worst internet researcher. I dislike IT intensely. Being a grey top in the autumn of life it's a generational thing with me.

One of my dear friends had her "G.mail" account hacked only last Saturday. The scum that did this was identified as being based in Lagos and transferred her contact data into an @Yahoo.com email account headed with her name. When sent this fraudulent "ghost" email appeared to be from her. His emails stated that she was in Cyprus on holiday and had been robbed of all her possessions and furthermore, could we (her friends) send money to her via Western Union to get her home. Of course we smelt a rat immediately as my friend would have no problem in such circumstances to draw down funds anywhere in the world at a moments notice due to her substantial financial standing. IT is a plague upon modern society. Whoops, apologies for the IT rant. Definitely off-topic.

I will have a dig around, Athelstan, we have quite a few relatives over in NZ, from experience most of the hire companies tend to use oriental vehicles, they have quite a few models we never see in Europe, I know it goes against the brain but limiting yourself to LR, in such an isolated location from a service and backup point of view may not be wise.

If you were to venture to Tasmania, then I know of a very nice G Wagen, it's wheels are still in my garage here though Laughing

Australia 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 SE Auto Lago Grey

New Zealand has the oldest car fleet I have ever seen. You might get a Freelander 1 petrol 1.8 ? The place is full of grey Japanese imports...models that I have never seen before. I think you would be paying a lot for anything good, lucky the exchange rate will be well in your favour. Also, allow extra time to drive anywhere outside the main cities as there are a lot of winding single lane roads where it's difficult to overtake. Stirring Kiwis is our national pastime in Australia. Smile

Gentlemen
Thank you all for your inputs; they are helpful as this will be my first visit to NZ hence why I want to spend as much time there as I can whilst not incurring the wrath of daughter and her mother Whistle

Winding single track roads are familiar territory to me, the alps are full of'em, and so are Scandinavia and the Highlands of Scotland - great fun on a Ducati or in a Morgan but less so in a LR. It goes far too much against the grain to hire anything 4x4 oriental or indeed from the USA. Maybe a campervan will be the solution but that also swims against the tide of my love for a power shower and a very decent night's kip at the end of the day to rest my now somewhat ancient and knackered body Sad

NZ is diametrically opposed to you on the planet, both physically and as an option to have a thrilling driving experience.
Casual, lazy, scenic (in a different way to you are used to) are words to describe driving in NZ. It is a lovely place to visit and explore, but do not have you hopes up to experience some of the driving dreams you describe above.
You may just have to take that camper option. You will enjoy.

Hi Bookleaf
Thanks for your comments. They are welcomed.

The reason I am planning to visit NZ is exactly as you have described. I intend to make progress in a lazy loping canter across a sparsely populated (human not sheep) territory in comfort, and not as I oft did here in Europe like a frenzied antelope being chased by a cheetah. Which brings me to my search for a comfortable LR model - don't care what it is so long as it is not a Defender or an old knackered FL1, D3, or "seen better days" RRS or FFRR.

I know of someone who emigrated to NZ about five years ago, he said that they were not very advanced with technology and did not network their office equipment. after seeing this rental company in NZ I now know what he meant, they still rent Series 1 Disco's Shocked A few I have found rent out the TD5 Series 2.

I came across that site the other evening and with the D1 not being in my "comfort" criteria I gave them a miss. I also came across another site that seemed to targeted the fishing community who on one of their pages referred to LR vehicles but on closer inspection only have Toyota SUV's. Some of these renters have websites that look as though they have not been updated for years. Hopeless.

Thanks for the tip, I'll trawl through the member's list, but, do you have or know of those Kiwis that have posted in the last 12mths or thereabouts as these would be more likely to be abreast of the current availability of hire vehicles from the LR stable?
