Cleaning goose down coats

Picking up from this topic: http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic17558.html

Has anyone got cleaning tips for goose down coats as and when I need to clean it? Could not see the right tag on the coat at first glance. I looked online which suggested dry clean only but you have to be careful with that. Some suggest hand washing with mild detergent in luke warm water followed by cool tumble dry.

My Tog24 gore tex coat is easy to wash, stick it in machine then cool tumble re-proofs the outer coating. No machine wash for this new coat.

Perhaps some of you have such coats so any thoughts? LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

I am in the same dilemma... I have a north face vostok that has got a bit smelly. Problem is its now two sizes to big for me... So don't really want to spend £40 plus getting it professionally cleaned.

I have some "special" down cleaner and have head machine wash on a gental setting with tumble dry with some tennis balls in to help the down to fluff back up should be fine.

Thanks for the input Jon. Can you post a link to the down cleaner you buy? LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Just to let you know took the plunge and washed mine yesterday. Went of for a walk and a cold clear day turned into a thunderstorm so coat was soaked through so decided what's the worst that could happen!

Put it in the washing machine at 30 on a 400 spin with an extra rinse to make sure all the product gets rinsed out.

Came out of the machine very heavy with no loft after a good fee hours in the tumble dryer all back to normal Smile

Hope that helps
