Saw this link on another forum...shows you can't go by the rating systems when it comes to winter tyres - they are tested at 25C

Very interesting. Thanks for posting that, I've always wondered why the label rating was poor Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Interesting video Doc but I cannot help thinking its still a little biased, Goodyear video Goodyear tyres Whistle. The driver does not seem to brake hard but feathers the brake with the summer and budget tyres, I know you are not mention to brake hard on ice or snow but also doing an emergency stop would have been interesting to see the actual stopping distance in an emergency.

Speaking with Andy the other day at AJS and he had some Dunlop SJ 61 I believe, looked very good lots of sipes and really soft compound, all of what you need for extra grip but with it been that soft I would expect you could not run them all year as they would scrub down too quickly.

Yes, the bias thought occurred to me. It doesn't state the brand of budget tyres but I guess that was to be expected. If it brings balance back, I can say that my conti ts850 winter tyres get a better rating in snow and ice than the Goodyear ultragrip 8 Mr. Green Laughing http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accessories-t...tact-ts850 LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Hi. I have always used winter tyres on my cards ... Ford Scorpio, Ford Focus, BMW 730i, Freelander 2. I spend many months 5000 ft up in the French Alps, and don't like putting on snow chains, but I always carry a set, for sheet ice under a light covering of fresh snow on a steep slope. AVON ICE Touring and AVON RANGER ICE, and Nokian are all excellent. Have just put on the Freelander some new Vredstein QUATRAC 3 SUV Tyres (Malvern Tyres). Not tested yet (by me), but the spec is very high. These are ALL WEATHER Tyres, which carry the M+S mark, but much more importantly, they carry the Mountain and snow flake (Severe Service Emblem) .... this means that they have been formally tested in real snow and passed the test. As for the chains, I've bought some Maggi TRAK 4x4 LT50 ladder track chains, as LR do not permit the use of normal chains ( lack of space behind the tyre I assume ....5mm!). Hope this helps. Very Happy

Hi

Sitting on a set of Pirelli 235/60/18 Scorpion Winter tyres (M+S and Mountain/Snowflake) and also have a set of Maggi LT50 chains just in case Very Happy

Got them at very good prices in the summer - prices now beginning to go up I see. They were ranked No1 in the Auto Build allroad test http://www.pirelli.com/tyre/gb/en/car/gene...inter.html

Bring on the winter! Wink Wink

I see the test you posted about includes the predecessor to my tyres, the conti ts830. Didn't think the contis were made for 4x4's, just small cars or saloons etc. I see the test car was a Q3 Confused LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

True that test vehicle was a Q3 but there are not that many tests out there. If you look at the test conditions here http://www.autobild.de/bilder/allrad-winte...html#bild0|ref=http://www.autobild.de I think they gave them a good run for their money Shocked

Mine are 107H XL for the FL2 - we'll see how they get on in the next couple of months Very Happy

Will have to examine that site more closely later to try and find tests for my tyres. They seem to be top rated on other sites I've seen but I would like to see what it says on there. Thanks for the link Thumbs Up LL.B (Hons) - University of Derby

Well I decided to cancel my order for the budget tyres. Mainly after doing extensive research I had niggling doubts about their all round capability, so it's back to the drawing board im afraid.
