Continental 4 x4 Contact tyres

These tyres have only lasted about 17k on the front of my 57 plate freebie 2....does this seem a bit poor or is it about average...if it is poor are there any suggestions for replacements...also is there any benefit in fitting so called "winter tyres" over all season one's...thanks in advance

17k does seem a bit low, I would expect 20 - 25 but of course it depends on so many factors including driving style, road surfaces etc.
There are a number of forum members running winters all year round, but as they are a softer compound they will wear quicker in the warmer weather, so you might only get one long winter out of them depending on your yearly mileage.
Pirelli scorpion verdes are my summer tyre and Vredestein wintrac 4's my winter. I know both would do all year round but as I intend keeping the car for a few years economically it makes sense for me to have two sets. _________________

17k on my continentals, and 4/5mm left of tread. To be honest I will be glad to change them as I much preferred the Wranglers I had before. Just put my Hankook Dynapros on for winter, so will see how they perform. So far I'm very impressed, nice and quiet, good grip and great at water dispersal.

I had 30k out of my front Conti's before I changed them, which was not as good as the Wranglers, they did 38k before I changed them. Continental are not my favourite tyre, poor in winter with poor wear. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

26000 out of my Continenetal 4x4 Contacts. Went for the same again as I only had to buy 3 and used the full sized spare, keeping the best of the original ones as the spare.
Had money not been tight I'd have changed to Goodyear Wrangler HP AW which in my opinion are a better tyre for the Freelander 2.

Amazing the differences people get...we live in Bucks and do mostly country and main roads ...occasional motorways ...they are checked regularly and still can't get over 17k on the front and only a couple of mm more on the rears since they were all fitted in October 2011

if you only get 17k from a set of tyres is your mpg about 25-30 ??

harsh accelerating or braking or spirited driving takes its toll on tyres...
check tracking and ball joint,s as any play or mis-alinment can wreck tyres before you know it ...

I had 27k from previous set of continentals and get 36- 40. mpg average
better on a long run ..

I'm on my second set of Continentals and there was no comment at last weeks MOT at 53,000. So about 27,000 a set.

But I can only dream of 36-40mpg; normally 30-33 (calculated on top-up to top-up) but that usually includes approx. fortnightly visits to my mother in south London with each visit (including shopping and lunch trips when I'm there) averaging at least 1.5 hours of crawling in traffic jams).

Just sold my 07 SE which has Conti 4 x 4 cross contacts from new. On my 3rd set, with about 35k per set usage and still usable tread at each change (but wanted more tread to cover winter use). However, now 5 weeks into my 13 HSE Lux, fitted with 19" Conti UHP's, but not hearing the most favourable reports about them. My driving style hasn't changed (well I suppose it has with me now driving an auto!) so will see how they perform during the winter and beyond. 2007 SE Manual : Gone and missed but 2013 HSE Lux is better!
Series IIa : Gone but hopefully still alive.

Continental UHP are a summer tyre unlike the 4x4 Contacts which are an all season tyre.
