The only ones in the UK that have had DPF problems were the ones who had recently picked up the vehicle from the forecourt, usually a sensor problem and never anymore problems.

Was reading the other day about a MAN tractor unit requiring a new DPF and had been quoted 11k Shocked it had done 3/4 of a mil but 11k Shocked p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we don't know we don't know.

I wonder if the new technology in the Hotfire engine will need a DPF or have they come up with a better solution, seems to be little info around or is it pretty much a run of the mill engine?

I have had the DPF wows with my last car a Jag XF, every month or two regardless if I had been on the motorway it would flash up DPF FULL SEE OWNERS HAND BOOK, this then usually meant a pointless 40 - 50 min round trip down the motoway untill it decided to clear its self, one occasion it failed and ended up having a forced regen.

As regards there contribution to a Greener earth I dont know but I do know they can be a nightmare. HSE TD4 Stornoway Grey ★ Rear Spoiler ★ Black Leather Interior ★ Panoramic Roof ★ Navigation with Bluetooth ★ 19 " Alloys ★ Alpine Stereo 10 Disc Auto changer and Ipod connection and lots of other nice toys ★

Interesting post that the "Italian Tune up" is more likely to generate soot than burn it off. I'm also thinking that at the other extreme ("grandad mode") you won't get things hot enough to iniitate a regen.

My usual commute trip to/from work involves 16 miles of 40-60mph roads with stops and variable speed. Will be interesting to see if this avoids a regen on normal use, or if i need to take the motorway route once in a while.

I presume the original posters comment about burn rate is being monitored via diagnostics. Since I'm interested in the diagnostic side I will probably invest in either a Faultmate or Mangoose interface (possibly both) so will be interesting to monitor this.

I have had 4 different vehicles over the last 7 years, all with DPF's. (Vectra/Insignia/Freelander x 2)

I have never had any issue of any sorts with Regen's, DPF's full etc etc. and have never ever seen a warning light on any of these cars. I really don't understand how so many people across a variety of forums run into such trouble with them, I really don't. Foraging near Gaydon....

I have only had one car with a DPF (Saab 9-3) which I bought nearly new and had an ocassional DPF issue even though it was 'driven'. My understanding is the way EU legislation is framed it makes it impossible NOT to use a DPF. As with most things from the EU it is legislation framed by technocrats who have no effing clue and failing to consider the unintended consequencies so as usual end up achieving the law of opposites of what they set out to achieve. There is plenty of evidence of DPF's being removed on other brands however has anyone tried it on an FL2? As an aside I understand the Mazda SKY tech diesel meets EU6 without much of the tech other manufacturers seem to employ, Hopefully JLR will also avoid complex and expensive solutions such as used by MBZ etc with the new Hotfire engines. eh tu?

We have them at work, one with 120k never been a problem, one with 79k which has just had a DPF sensor replaced as we kept getting EMS light but nothing else, no power issues, and our own FL2, no problems plus the current D4 no problems, the latter two I would have expected to give problems as they normally around town, rarely getting out of fourth and 120 miles a week. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior
