Baffled by the pronouncements of Landrover supremos these days - they seem determined to undermine their own product - surely some of em must secretly still be on the BMW payroll. There was this chap that wanted the Discovery to match the Merc E Series- which means complex, fragile, hugely expensive to run.......... not much of a Landrover really.

What on earth are they on about when it is reported that the Defender replacement is supposed to be all about
more "luxury"!

And the new Discovery is now going to drop the word Landrover from the front bonnet and replace it with "Discovery". To me that is to dilute the brand - do they not realise that in many parts of the world the LR Discovery was actually nicknamed the "Recovery" because many were was so unreliable - too many poor quality complex and fragile components? Are they not proud of the name Landrover - a lot of other car manufacturers would love to have such an iconic brand name front and centre on their cars.
What would be wrong with the bosses promising us better quality cars and then gearing up the company to produce better cars not faffling about with a torrent of codswallop about brand pillars of Liesure, Dual purposefulness and Luxury?

Couldn't agree more! I'm still chuffed to death to think I'm driving a Land Rover (even though it's "only a Freelander" ) and get a buzz from seeing the badge every time. I reckon the Defender is one of the true motoring legends and should possibly be updated and improved but NOT replaced. I'm not even sure about the "improved" bit if that involves more electronics and the dreaded hands-off off-road automatic gizmos. There must be a world-wide market for a simple straightforward machine that is capable of on and off-road driving in all conditions and yet remains fixable by small-town or even no-town mechanics. You'd think that Indian owners would be more switched on to this than most - for heaven's sake, they are still making a slightly updated version of the 1940's design Royal Enfield Bullet over there and selling it all over the world!

I've just had my Freelander serviced by our local village garage and the only thing he couldn't fix was the tailgate release. It works perfectly with the remote door-locker but won't function with the manual release. Chris (the mechanic) reckons it's a microswitch and must be plugged into Land Rover's computer diagnostics to be fixed. Talk about ludicrous  Ours - 2008 Stornoway Grey HSE Auto

Meanwhile over on the various Range Rover forums they're moaning about having a green oval Land Rover badge on their cars which incidentally will feature on the front of the Land Rover vehicles as well.

Land rover have lost the plot they should be proud to be different if we wanted a crap off road luxury car we'd buy a BMW but we want a land rover because of its ability and practicality, instead of spending money on the looks sort the faults out to make them more reliable. They need better quality parts, the rear diff is a sorry excuse for a land rover part the wheel bearings are useless, I've had 4 replaced and the dmf is a different story When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car

Joking aside, there is nothing wrong with the way things are at the moment. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I think it is about brand dilution - I would not want Discovery or Freelander on the front centre of my next car - it has to be Landrover in nice big bold letters.
The Range Rover stands above all other cars - it has its own iconic status and they could afford to dilute it a bit with the Sport. I think they were perhaps pushing it a bit with the Evoque but I can see the logic - some of the big car's magic does associate nicely with a baby RR.
But the Discovery name does not have the same motoring legend status - everyone knows what a Landrover is - so why not value the brand?
