I have Maxxis AT700 Bravos at 245/65/17 on mine now. I changed because they were $70 cheaper per tyre. They are fine though not as strong as the Yokos, I ripped a sidewall on one of them on the Birdsville Track around a month ago. I doubt whether the Yokos would have suffered the same damage but you never know.

I'm putting Goodyear Wrangler AT/SA 235 65 R17 on mine this weekend.

Have seen decent reviews on them.

I've read we can put 245 65 17 on our rims without mods would this be ok ? I imagine wider tyres = more grip

Goodyear at/sa is what I want When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car

I've been using 245/65/17 for over 100,000kms and wouldn't go back to the 235's. The tyres are perfectly legal here, Land Rover have seen my car a few times and not said a word about it. The tyres are not only wider but are taller as well. They are much better off road. I don't have anything bad to say about the Maxxis AT on my car.

SO what about the rear shock cup as the standard 235 tyres are pretty close already.

do you get tyre rub on the cup or do you have to use spacers?

Have you got any pictures you could put up of the tyres on the car please?

the AT2 worked great on my defender, but they dont come in 17? I think you will have to go to 18s, if you can find them, as it was mentioned before, the tyre was replaced by the Grabber AT to meet noise restriction levels.

Be warned though, the at2 is useless on ice with no spikes.

Oh you can get them in 17 mate, I had a quote already £500 fitted for all four sides.

But I didn't imagine them to be good on ice but thanks for the heads up.

No rubbing, no spacers. The following link is my trip to the high country last January. The tyres in all the pictures were 245/65/17 Maxxis AT 700 Bravos

As in this posting which also has pics of the tyres and clearance to struts ; http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic16044.html

I fitted General Grabber At's in the 245/70 X 17 size earlier this year.

Whilst not quite as refined on the road as the Good Year Wranglers that I had last I have found they have a huge amount more grip off road as well as extra ground clearance and am very pleased with them.

I think mine cost me about £110 each supply only from Blackcircles.

OK an update on Maxxis tyres...I have another one that has a slash in the sidewall. They are fine in every way but it seems the sidewalls are not up to any rugged 4wding. I'm beginning to think they are soft as butter.

I am also in the market for new tyres at the moment and having been quoted for Cooper AT3 fitted at a good deal cheaper than the General Grabber AT, I am now considering pricing up the larger rubber shown in the linked threads.

Personally my driving style is fast road, and I spend 99% of my time on A roads but this may be changing soon with the prospect of a better job and a commute of 25 miles over the malverns each day. I have General Grabber UHPs at the moment and the car handles fantastically on them.

I previously owned an Impreza WRX Waggon which was a fantastic car but I ruined the handling as I changed brand of tyre, I don't want to make the same mistake with the Freelander. If I go to an AT tyre will the handling of the vehicle be compromised, especially if I opt for the larger tyre???

There is a reason that race cars have low profile tyres, they give better more direct handling with less sidewall flex at speed. Off road, you are better with more sidewall and a bigger footprint for traction on loose surfaces. The bigger sidewall also helps minimize damage to the rims from hitting rocks. On road, a larger tyre with bigger sidewalls will give a more 'roly poly' ride that will handle worse but be quite comfortable because it softens the ride.
If you want it to handle anything like a race car then the larger tyres aren't for you.
