My Freelander has been booked in for its first service next week. They recommended having an engine flush which would cost about £40, is this advisable on a first service?. Have done 8000 miles.

I thought the days of flushing out new engine swarf were long gone, can see no reason for it, I would only recommend a flush to someone with sludge issues and they are normally down to poor oil. Paul Redding

....Flush it - it will probably have no effect on your new engine but works great as a prevention of problems related with carbon deposits. Better pay few £ to avoid costly repairs later.Remenber that the oil gets diluted by diesel on DPF cars.

The oil can be diluted by diesel, depends on driving style, many engine manufacturers advise against an engine flush on modern cars. Sounds like a dealer initiative to extract more money by using so called added value products.

The OP has done 8000 miles in the first year, I personally would use the better diesels over this mileage, end result would be a difference of about £40 but spread over time with the benefit of better performance and the cleaner engine.
