Service indicator

Despite having a mere 3700 miles on the clock my car is now telling me that I need an oil service. I bought it as a dealer pre-reg in January when it was 3 months old. That means it is now 12 months old.

Is the FL2 service indicator really that unintelligent that it works on time alone? There's no way this car needs a service after less than 4000 miles, but presumably if I wait my warranty will be at risk?

Could be due to failed DPF regen, but because a year has passed I'm assuming it is just the annual service oil change due.

You have two service indicators. If it is an "oil service" it is said to be the oil quality that has deteriated due to the number of DPF regenerations. The normal service countdown normally comes on first which you can reset yourself, the "oil service" is not something we can reset, it will need the dealer to do it. The first of the facelift models had the oil service warning and dealers were forgetting to reset both indicators, mine among with a few others had to revisit the dealer for it to be reset after our first service.
You may want to do a search on the oil service, it has been mentioned a few times, not sure if its best to ignore it. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

The "oil service" indicator came on on my 11MY phoned the dealer and they said so long as the car has plenty of oil it will be fine until its service, which was the following week.

Land Rover Freelander 2 service intervals are every 12months or 16,000 IIRC, better to get it serviced than risking voiding your warranty. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Mine has come up with the "oil service" for the last three months. Dealer said it was fine, it will be checked when it goes in for its second service in a few weeks.

The "oil service" indicator is triggered from information received from an optical sensor, as contaminants build up and become suspended in the oil they darken the oil triggering the sensor.
More importantly, the oil has now become saturated with abrasive substances, this leads to premature wear of components and is the reason the sensor is fitted, the garage to say another few weeks is fine is wrong, it could also have repercussions with any subsequent warranty claim, as LR will cite neglect and throw out the claim.

Not to self, do not buy a black Freely with three previous owners and shows signs of having a BMX in the boot and a RRS brochure with the pages stuck together in the glove box Whistle p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Rolling with laughter

Still a bit confused, because I went to two different dealers who both said it would be fine. Confused

Oh well, only keeping the car for another year. Whistle

Some mention it is time derived, some that it looks the number of DPF regenerations, the only specific thing I can see is that an oil dilution over a set percentage triggers it?
It's the warranty angle that would bother me, the light is there for a reason and ignoring it, as it would appear in a claim, the dealer won't stand up to say its fine then, is tantamount to neglect on your part.
Mine came on just after a service, which would indicate it needs to be reset, if oil dilution is the issue then any sensor may be seeing "thinner" oil, giving rise to why people seem to get the error just after a service, just my own observations of course.

Think this is about the best thread on the "Oil Service"

http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic10849.html?

Will wait for a thread being started soon, my Freely made a sound of little hammers under the bonnet then one Big Bang and now its quiet, but won't turn over. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

My oil service warning comes on about 2 weeks before the car service is due. Did it last year and the same this year. I wonder if it is time or sensor activated.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

I'm still not 100% sure if this indicator is based on time or on some sort of sensor though. The reason I'm unclear I think is that it's come on at almost exactly 12 months since first registration. Surely that can't be coincidence can it?

The element of doubt the other way comes in due to my pattern of driving. Nowadays, with my job having changed location, I'm only making very short journeys with only occasional longer ones, so I am a little suspicious of DPF-related triggering.

To be perfectly honest, a petrol car would be much more suitable for me these days. Confused
