If you get your wood for nowt, it's a no brainer. Otherwise anthracite, more heat, used to keep mine going for a week in winter with it and very little ash.

Hope you've got a metal bucket for hot ash Thumbs Up Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Be careful not to over burn too, a nice glow is good but flames going wild is bad and you'll be heating the world! Black FL2

hunter are a good brand, villager too

the hunter burns better but the villager keeps going all night more reliably, this maybe more due to chimney differences than stove differences,

stoves with a riddling grate are useful, having the handle at bottom of door rather than top also useful it doesnt get so hot.

study the ash removal door, needs to be simple with a good opening and no nooks and crannies that need extra cleaning,

hunter has a flaw that if and small pieces fall out of the door, they sit on a ledge and you cant close the door without cleaning off the ledge.

villagers ash door is too low to ground so you have to move the ash bucket in order to close door.

small things but they niggle

a flue damper is handy (again chimney dependant), my hunter seems to blow all the heat up chimney with damper open, burns lovely with damper 2/3 closed.

a good tip when cleaning out the fire is lay a fire blanket on hearth, simply pick it up after and shake it outside.

or if fire is out lay newspaper on hearth during clean out then put dirty newspaper in stove to light it.

I had a yeoman in my last house, great stove , my parents live there now stove still going great approx 13 years old.

Have a look at Charnwood Log Burners. The grate on the one we have comprises oval bars and by using a handle on the side you can riddle the ash into a removable tray which makes cleaning very easy. The grate being oval bars can be configured to give a solid base for wood or airways for coal/anthracite just by moving a lever. Not cheap and to get the best out of it (and any stove) you do need a chimney liner either in ceramic (best) or stainless, which is better than nothing, but will corrode in time.

To get the best out of these stoves you need well seasoned wood - lots of folk going for stoves as burning wood is considered "Green", accordingly the price of wood is going through the roof but not for us as we get it gratis Whistle MY 09 GS manual in Lago Grey, Wood Co arm rest and side bumper strips - now sold.

Those thinking of getting a woodburner, things to consider IMHO...

1. Get a stove the right size for the room you're heating. Most manufs give guidance
2. Choose multifuel with riddle if poss. Allows you to burn coal (burns long & hot, but messy to clean up the next day
3. Do you want a back boiler to heat water as well as heat the room?
4. Choose a rear exit flue if poss, giving you a good area of flat top for warming drinks etc
5. There's a consensus that cast iron is best. Probably
6. We have two woodburners, both Stovax, which have proved effective and reliable
7. Look out for regulations... eg need for so many inches of non-combustible hearth at front of stove.
8. Stoves over a certain capacity demand a permanent vent to the outside to 'prevent build up of dangerous gases'. If you have the stove installed by a pro, he'll insist before certifying the install
9. Factor in the cost of having your chimney lined if needed
10. Ensure you have access to a good supply of wood. Get a chainsaw & a log splitter

Hope that helps, and isn't just so much duplication... Confused

Cheers! ...

Be true to yourself. That way happiness lies...

Lurcher,

May I suggest that you move the log pile leaning against your house wall as during WW2 my Dad had a source for supplying logs which used to be stacked in the same manner as yours and we ended up with damp walls as the moisture from the wood after any rain fall leeched through the brickwork.
I suppose that you could put a sheet of impervious material behind it but hope you do not mind me pointing out a possible future problem.

luckily for me , me and my dad planted several thousand trees when I was about 16, these are in blocks and are now too close together so each winter I fell a few, laying them down in the wood in mini stacks, they stay there for a couple of years then get logged , never more than 1ft in diameter easy too cut and split .

oak ash and beech, some confer to these need an extra year of drying, quite often the electric board replace old wood pylon poles with new, I get to keep the old ones for logs, there is one in the long grass on my way to the pub, I reversed into it the other night.

A mate of mine services the fork trucks at a local kitchen manufacturer, He comes hone with piles of mdf and chip board cut offs in his van, his house is always baking hot . At work
