Ireland 2008 Freelander 2 TD4 GS Manual Santorini Black
Exhaust Camshaft Failure

Dear Forum Members,

Have just joined here, am a Freelander 2 lover. Hello to all.
I am considering purchasing a 2008 (last 8 digits of VIN: 8H090479) Freelander. I had a freelander 2 already and am aware of diff and steering rack problems. The camshaft failure issue on 07/08's was news to me until I discovered it on the excellent posts here. Maybe someone could try to answer a few questions for me;

1. What is the rate of failure? of the cars with the early design camshaft do we know or can we estimate how many have failed. Should I just not buy one of these.

2. I know from reading posts here that the camshaft was redesigned from VIN 8H092006 onwards. Have fialures occurred in cars right up to this no, ie is VIN 8H090479 at risk of failure.

3. I really want to buy this freelander but cannot aford a later car. If I replace the exhaust camshaft is this going to resolve the problem/risk?

4. If replacing the camshaft makes sense, whats the damage likely to be. I see a new camshaft can be had for 300 Euro, but how much will the labour and other bits cost?

Many Thanks

I don't think it is as widespread as some fear. I have spoken to my dealer about this and they have never replaced one that has failed.

This to me speaks volumes. Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........

Russia? mmm could make sense, below zero temperatures and then sudden heat up from the engine and vice versa? Freelander 2 HSE Lux 2013MY - Barolo Black with Ivory Leather. Alpine DVD - Privacy -Evoque 20" Dynamic Wheels and more to come.........
