Limp mode after refueling

FL2 2.2 td4_e (2010) with 41000 miles went on limp mode yesterday afternoon almost immediately after refueling. I don't know if it had something to do with the refuel however. I most certainly did not fill up with the wrong fuel. Little i appeared on the dash with 'reduced engine performance' notice. Car won't go over approx. 2750 rpm in gear 1-4, 2200 rpm in gear 5 and 1500 rpm in gear 6. Max. 70-75 mph can be reached but it takes ages to get there. Since the car is so low on power, motorway driving (joining the traffic, changing lanes) can be fairly dangerous, overtaking on B-roads, forget it. Took it to the dealer 20 minutes before their closing time, they were able to read the fault code which had something to do with turbo pressure that was too low. However, they can't investigate the issue in more depth until next Thursday 8th but they told me it was OK to keep using the vehicle in the mean time. Anyone experienced this problem before?

You mean the DPF (diesel particle filter) I presume?
I don't think so, shouldn't they have noticed right away if that was the problem?
Also it doesn't fit with the too low turbo pressure fault code (I think)

Right, DPF... here FAP...

However, if they've said it's turbo pressure I presume it's real...
Symptoms were very similar like DPF problems

If there is a fault code that points to the turbo, then that's the suggestion...
A low pressure intake situation gives you exactly that symptom... And if the tail smoke is much more than normal, it confirms the diagnosis...
Is the situation changing after a key power cycle? Meaning when you switch off/on the ignition the car behaves normal for a little while and only then the message reappears?

Hi Alex, there's no smoke behind the car.
On/off doesn't change a thing, message appears immediately after starting and stays on, repeated before key is undocked.
Have done +/- 200km since the message first appeared. Behavior stays the same as yesterday and the day before, so the situation doesn't worsen. Car can be driven (very carefully) but it annoys other traffic participants (and me..).
Guess I'll have to wait until Thursday to learn more.
I'll keep you informed!

The message on the dash is confirming that there is a problem and a fault code is stored. Which you already know. Reading/knowing that fault code(s) will give you a fair impression on what's going on.
If the error appears immediately after power-up, without driving it, and the error code suggests turbo, then it seems more a mechanical problem (something seized - the variable geometry for example) detected by the system than a dynamically problem (lack of turbo pressure when demanding power from the engine).

Are there any (new) abnormal noises (hissing, whooshing, etc) that could lead you to a possible small crack on some rubber intake hoses?

No abnormal noises, I have the impression the turbo never kicks in . Feels like driving an 1,9 ton car with an atmo 50hp diesel engine now. Somehow the airflow has to be disturbed so the turbo cannot build pressure. I hope it's not very serious, warranty expired 4 months ago...

Apparently it was a gas pedal sensor that failed. Now the power is back and also the gear shift indicator and eco start/stop system work fine again.

Good luck with that

I have had the same problem since I bought my Freelander 11 months ago (2011 FL2 2.2 td4e 15000 miles). Turbo not cutting in.

It's been back to the local dealer 4 times now and they have replaced a number of sensors, including the accelerator pedal sensor, exhaust sensors, and even a complete new turbo.

It's just gone back in again since the turbo was replaced 8 months ago as this appeared to have fixed the issue. But recently it had developed a "flat spot" then the same symptoms reappeared where there was no turbo cutting in and "Reduced Engine Performance" came up on the dash. Only done another 8K miles since I bought it.

To be fair, my local Landy dealer have been excellent! Land Rover recovery out the same day and a replacement Freelander ready for me when I limped into the dealer each time.

This time they asked me if I'd ever had the car chipped, which I haven't, but I thought they could tell that? They are still scratching their heads over this as I type.

Just wish it could get fixed as I do love my car...

UPDATE - just had a call from my dealer. There is some new engine management software they have received from LR (for a known fault) that they have been assured will fix the issue.
Let's see if it does... Freelander2 2,2 Td4 GS Stornaway Grey, Removable Tow bar
