Driving licence reminder

just a reminder to check the expiry date on your Photocard Driving Licence.....

There are two dates on the 4th line...4a is the start date..... And 4b is the expiry......
Points and fine for driving without a current licence...... If it's out of date... Big Cry
Check it peeps, could already be out of date... Thumbs Up Black FL2

Not only check your expiry date but check your address is right too, many people move and forget and then realise its not right just when they need it to be.

There are already plans to phase out old-style licences altogether (Parliament has given the powers), although no date has been set yet for when they will be made illegal. I'd bet it'll be long before your 22 years expire though! I, too, still have the old-style licence, and will be hanging on to it as long as possible, but the writing is on the wall.

I've just got my new photocard licence, it was a case of having to do something as my paper one was in tatters and virtually unreadable.
I would pull it out of my wallet in as much as 6 pieces.

No, because it was a replacement and not an expiry renewal it expires in 2018 the same as my old paper one.

I may be wrong but I think its only the photocard that expires - doesn't the paper counterpart remain valid?

Its just another stealth tax anyway - with the excuse being that we all change so much over ten years we need a new photograph and by the way that's £20 even though your details are on file via your passport (and that could be up to 5 years old).

I've just had a quick look at how to 'upgrade' to a photocard (not planning to do it, just out of interest!) and it appears that if you have a digital passport (which they describe as one which has the photo and signature on the same page) they'll use the photograph from your passport for the new licence. "If you have a UK digital passport (issued since 5 October 1998) the photo on this will be used on your photocard driving licence."

Which would appear to mean that, if you've had your passport for some time, the photograph could be anything up to 10 years old when you get the new licence. And thus 20 years old by the time the licence expires! Rather defeats the object of updating the photo every 10 years!

Can that be right?! Comes from gov.uk:

By law you cannot hold two driving licences in one name so they insist on you returning your old paper licence to be destroyed.
Your new comes in two parts, your photocard plus a paper counterpart (D740) showing any convictions, points etc that they say must be kept together although I have filed the paper part.
Also the paper counterpart must be taken with you when driving abroad, it seems to defeat the whole purpose really. Confused as I thought a credit card size licence is all I would need for my wallet.

Just a quick hint: If you're applying for a new Driving License it's worth making a photocopy of the card with your entitlements. It has been known in the past for DVLA to 'lose' some categories and then deny they were ever there.
Not sure how common it is now buy has happened in the past, allegedly...

Just renewed my one last year, so that's good until 2022.

As I have a PCV I now have to inform my company that its about to expire and they will replace it after I have passed my medical, which will then only last 5 years Rolling Eyes. whereas before I wouldn't need a medical until I hit 45 then every 5 years until I hit 65 in 2050.

On top of that I have to keep my CPC card updated every 5 years Rolling Eyes 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

It happened to one of our drivers, DVLA forgot to add his D and D1 entitlement. If you have an HGV or PCV entitlement I thinks a pink form D2 rather than the green D1 form. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Also if you are coming up to 70 make sure you apply for your new licence with all your existing entitlements at least 6 months before the expiry date or you will loose them.
Pal of mine did not realize this and lost his LGV and motorcycle licence and lost his driving job.

Also you will have to take a medical if you need anything more than a car or bike licence, I had to take one to keep up my mini bus and 7.5 ton (in English money) and this has to be renewed at 73.

At 73 I reapplied and discovered you cannot do the 7.5 ton and mini bus "on line", so as it is no longer important just sent off for renewal and guess what? It came back with all entitlements still intact!
