Advice for caring for poorly baby bird...

Just found this sat on the drive with its eyes shut, has let the neighbour walk right up and pick it up.

Appears to be very tired/ill, has got water and some tiny bits of apple to munch on in an open topped box stuffed with my cleaning cloths!!

Any ideas how to best care or feed?

Crush some dog mixer into a runny paste and try feeding it with a cocktail stick but break the point off, some crushed bird seed would be good as it is predominantly a seed eating bird rather than a fruit eater, crushed mealworms mixed in baby milk powder to a runny mix rather than a dry paste. It will need this every few hours though. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Try to get a pippet, and get a bit of water inside him,,,get a small wriggly worm and hols it in front of him,cut it in half it will riggle faster and he should take it,,,as at they age I'm sure his parents have fed worms... Current: Freelander 2 GS, Orkney Grey, Factory fit privacy glass, design pack and Clearview pack. Song birds are in decline so do what you can, might be a rescue centre local to you Idea

Or leave it under a hedge and let nature take its course

I'd do option 1 Thumbs Up Former Mod/Member, with the most post & Chicken George Arch nemesis

I'm always rescuing birds. As said, pippette or CLEAN eye/ear dropper and give just water. Gently squeeze beak yellow bits untill it opens its beak and push dropper in and empty. Also, some small seeds and bread soaked in milk using same 'pinching' method. If really small, put soaked bread on a matchstick. Normally though for a bird that size, unless its definately been abandoned, leave alone but watch out for predators - cats, crows and magpies and most times its parents will find it and look after it. Keep it warm. Fingers crossed. Past: FL2 TD4 HSE Auto

See if there's a rescue centre near by,,, don't like being in that situation Neutral I have stopped jobs before with newly born nesting in gable ends and have to tell the customers I can't carry on till the birds have flown the nest... For some reason once you play about with the nest the adults don't seem to return Sad

Good luck with this Jim and please let us know the outcome. BETTER looking half of the famous Twinlanders

The neighbour is looking after it, they have got an open sided summer house, it's perched up high in the roof section out of the rain. It had some strawberry mushed up and some water.

Fingers crossed it perhaps just got a bit warm and dehydrated Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the advice, I've passed it on. 2013 FL2 - Black Edition Auto
