Roof boxes: NO FIT!! ON FACTORY CROSSBARS???

Hi,

I got the roof rails and the factory crossbars. I wanted to get a thule roof box, so I went to the Thule web site and it says that it's a no fit. I called them and they only thing they had to say was that it was a no fit. What the Censored does that mean? so no thule boxes will fit the factory crossbars? Has anyone else run through this problem? What boxes can you put with the crossbars? It really seems that any box will fit the factory crossbars. Any help wil be appreciated.

Thanks

The areo style roof cross bars are very wide, you can get longer u bolts to use on any roof box but you will need to counterbore the holes and make extra ones where needed, had to do this with mine,I also modded my bike racks too! so I use the same ubolts for both,

I got these ones they have worked well!!

What about a softbox to sit on the roof between the roof rails

Avtur,

I rather not get a softbox because of safety issues. We drive a lot and sometimes have to stay in hotels and wouldn't want to leave the soft box out.

I'm a little confused here, are the factory crossbars the same aero style you are talking about? Does that mean that the factory quickgrips on the thule boxes would not work (or would they be in the way of the ubolts)? or would you used them with the Ubolts as an added safety measure?

Rovertoo,
The factory bars have an aero profile and this is how they reduce wind noise,my last post was only how I got round the problems as I had exsisting roof box and bike racks from my freelander 1(LN) i dont know what else will fit such wide bars but the genuine bike rack in the accessories cataloge fits ok and i think its made by THULE but not sure!!

all the best Tony Thumbs Up

Yes fully understand that. We used a soft box frequently when we live in the USA, but at that time we had a mini-van (Ford Windstar) if we stopped overnight we could put the softbox in the back of the van, but there was a lot more space inside the Windstar than an FL2 !!

Hants,
Does the power grip mounting on the box fit correctly (closes securely?) around the crossbar?

Mine is a close fit, but the arms open sufficiently.
Seems secure to me.
Not aware of any problems. Very pleased with it.
But, if you are not sure, test one.

The standard LR roof bars have a rubber strip along the top. This can be removed as Thule Areo bars and a "T" bolt fitting used. I have the roof bars but cannot used them for cycle carriers because I need four carriers and as two of the bike have stabilisers for the kids they need to be widely spaced have used older square bars and have bent the mounting from my FL1 to fit the roof rails.

Hi rovertoo. Did you ever find a solution to your problem? I'm looking at getting the rails and a Thule roof box but the Thule part numbers mentioned in this and other threads seem to only be available in the UK/Europe. I'm tempted to go for an entire LR solution but my money tree isn't quite ready for harvest. (Maybe Chicken George knows how I can increase my harvest yield.) I would like to have the removable crossbars (like muddywheels in this thread: http://www.freel2.com/forum/topic1929-30.html). Maybe I'll have get the parts shipped across the pond. But then I'll have the problem of not knowing if I can get a box that will fit. Banging Head
