Whilst I fully agree with you in principle there's an implicit assumption in the above statement that everyone else is capable of the same levels of judgement as you are. Sadly they are not - there are many, many people out there who lack intelligence, judgement and moral integrity, and whilst we don't need Nanny watching over us they do, not for their own sake but for the sake and safety of all our kids. The hard bit is coming up with a solution which doesn't impact on the likes of us, whilst still protecting us from the likes of them. And that, obviously, is not easy. Since my business is IT I have some slight knowledge of some of the ways these things get distributed, and whilst no sensible person is going to use Google (or any of the other mainstream search engines) to find such materials there are a variety of other ways involving less well known search engines and anonymising networks such as ToR and others. Obviously most of this stuff is hosted in parts of the world where the purveyors are relatively safe, and many of the characters involved are highly unsavoury. So what we have is a pool of willing consumers and plenty of criminals who are more than willing to supply them. And it is in our interests to stop that from happening. So I don't blame Cameron for wanting to have a go at this unsavoury trade, and I hope he is successful in at least reducing it. But I doubt that he will be. And I hope that he can find a way of doing it without trampling over the few liberties we have left. It's a real pity that the losers are always the 'good guys'. Networks like ToR can be good for so many things (like protecting freedom of speech in countries whose governments do their best to prevent it), but once the criminals start using them they become targets and are likely to end up being shut down or in some way neutralised. Since the law is clearly powerless to stop this trade, due to its global nature, technology is really the only weapon we have so obviously it's going to be used, even if there's a cost to the majority of us. Innocent until proved guilty? That's a concept which is gone, unfortunately, and which won't return until society finds a way to be decent, honest and honourable. Don't hold your breath - it's going to get worse before it gets better! |

The proposals discriminate against men. What is being done to prevent women from accessing their preferred source of porn, i.e. literature? |

I'm in IT as well and security is a biggy for me... so much so I have spent time with my kids to educate them properly ( ie social media / commerce sites / ID theft etc ). I like this idea - your not been stopped but its been opted in by default and for the majority of users this is a good thing as they do not know either way and I'm willing to bet would not know a firewall / AV or family safety software if it hit them in the face. These are the kind of Iphone users who like it because it works - they don't care how it just does what they want. For those that do not want it on - great - go opt out and learn what it is your opting out of... win win. On the subject of "Innocent until proved guilty" - may I suggest you google the following - ACS, ACS Bore, Golden Eye International, Torrent Freak and many more where you can see the story of how innocent people have to prove that fact against minimal information and where 'your' infomation can be freely accessed ( eg Norwich Pharmaceutical Order ). Many who fall in to the category of who need to be opted in or learn fall in to those traps too.... hell many have not learnt 'cloud' is not as safe as people think EXCEPT for commercial offerings as corporate tools... there you have legally binding contracts.... My last thought is Prism - personally I do not see what the shock is. I'd be more worried if governments did not have those capability so I am happy to know it does exist as long as its not abused. You can go further than Tor... direct connectivity is an issue - the so called 'Darknet'. T Terran ![]() 'The' Car For The Modern Day UK Roads ( ie all the pot holes ) 'A Freelander that leaks oil is just marking its territory' - Wise words Now a member of the FL2 'Silly Bill' Club |
