Steering rack...please HELP :(

I am new to the forum so apologise if this topic has already been covered.
I have a FL2 HST TD$
I have today been informed by my garage, after initially replacing the power steering pump, that I now need a new steering rack. I am aware that this is a known issue but the car is no longer under warranty and I didn't buy it from a main dealer.
I am happy (well, not happy!) to pay for a new rack etc as I love the car but my concern is this:
Is this a one off replacement? As in, once it's replaced am I no more likely to need another replacement than any other vehicle, or is it potentially a great big money pit where I will have to have numerous new racks?
I don't have any previous history on the car as far as repairs are concerned so don't know if it has been replaced before.
Was it a fault at the build stage and a new rack would cause no further problems or am I doomed??
Anyways advices would be greatfully received. Sad

know fault due to poor hygene at the welding stage, your luck your rack lasted so long ( or unlucky that it didnt happen to previous owner)

its possible that rack can be cured by flushing the oil and replacing, also by fitting a new reservoir with built in filter.

but I think your garage already did that or something like .

new rack should be fine as apparently to problem is cured.

Thanks for your reply chicken george. The car is going back in monday where he says he will check the filter before anything else. If a new rack will resolve the problem I'll be happy to part with the cash as long as I have peace of mind that it's not going to happen again.
One thought: is it safe to drive in the meantime or is that only going to cause more problems? I'm assuming that by driving it while its grinding and groaning away is only making matters worse?

I'm with CG, if it is because of the swarf in the pump, has got down to the Rack, it could in theory flush round and back to the pump again Question p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

HA! You're a cruel man CG!!

Have now booked the car in at the Main Dealers. They are going to replace the rack, reservoir, filter etc and flush through for the princely sum of £782.00. Just hope and pray that the problem does not reoccur after all that!!

Don't worry Sarah, it will be fine afterwards, it was the early models that suffered, surprised yours hasn't gone sooner, it is not something that we hear about much now. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

Thanks AD. Just wondering if a TSB was ever issued? Wouldn't mind having a look. The garage mentioned ringing LR Cust Service on Monday just to see if a goodwill gesture could be made. I very much doubt it but will give it a bash, especially if there was a TSB.
Fourth day (and counting) without a car. I am so so so bored Whistle

It's not being done until next wednesday but it's booked in for new rack, reservoir, filter and flush through. The new pump was fitted last week as another garage thought that was the problem so, depending on whether or not that has picked up any swarf in between time, that may be replaced as well. Bitten the bullet and its going to a main dealer so assume they know what they're doing. Rolling Eyes
