Door latch problems and hot weather

I've got a door latch problem but it only happens in hot weather. Cant open one of the rear doors when the car has been sitting in hot sun light. If the car has been in the shade the door is fine. When I use the fob it makes all the right sounds but wont open. This has happened a couple of times before when we have experienced a "heatwave". I went to my indie who said its the latch that wants replacing. As the door isn't used much I said I would leave it until it stops working altogether. However I've noticed that that little black internal lever/button (don't know its name) on the internal handle seems to catch the silver handle so doesn't fully open. Anyone else came across this or is it a classic sign of a faulty latch?

I've posted before about it but now i'm wondering if its not the latch but the interior handle that is playing up? But the thing that is frustrating is that it only happens in hot weather, not done it for the last 3 weeks, then it was 3 weeks before that!

Anyone got any ideas/suggestions? Cheers all Bow down Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.

Hi Stevie,

Funny that you bring this up, I have had my Freely just over a month and my Passenger Rear door latch is doing exactly the same. It was fine when I first collected the car but this last week it wont open as though its catching it makes all the right noises as though its opening.

Any way as the car is going in on the 15th to have the drivers seat looked at as it moves slightly when breaking heavely, Been told its a seat out job as its electric and the screw may need ajustment, I said they can fix the rear door while there at it.

Will let you know what they find and how they fix it if I can. HSE TD4 Stornoway Grey ★ Rear Spoiler ★ Black Leather Interior ★ Panoramic Roof ★ Navigation with Bluetooth ★ 19 " Alloys ★ Alpine Stereo 10 Disc Auto changer and Ipod connection and lots of other nice toys ★

Maybe its the really hot interior of the car, and they do turn into ovens in this heatwave that's causing the internal door handle and/or lock button to expand ever so slightly and start to bind with each other, causing resistance on to the latch. You say it doesn't do it in the shade which would make sense if this is whats causing it.

Just an idea...... MY2010 TD4 HSE Santorini Black, 19" Alloys, Almond Leather, Lux Pack, Rear Spoiler, Adaptive Xenons

Yeah I was wondering if something was expanding in heat of the car. I don't want to pay money for a latch only to find out it is something else. Like wise it only does it when its hot and I don't use that door much, my 7 year old sits on the other side so its not an urgent fix, just annoying! Had the same thing in my Golf recently, made all the right noises but passenger door wouldn't open. Turned out it was the control box for the door thet needed replacing that was sited inside the door panel. Also had similar problem with an old S3 that when hot sun shone on the door and car was parked, the door would open but would register on the dash that the door was still open when it was closed. This was a faulty sensor in the latch itself.

Service Bulletin No 301590 may be the one that covers this problem.
I Googled Land Rover Freelander service bulletins then searched one of the sites offered up for all service bulletins on 2010 LR2's - there are a few.

It might help your dealer / garage to know what to do anyway. Hope you sort it - not comfortable with doors that won't open!!

I had similar problem with my last fl2 in that occasionally I could not shut passenger door if car was parked in strong sunshine for a lengthy period. I reported it on the forum a few years ago, see link below, but no-one else seemed to have similar problem. I reported it to dealer but they were unaware of any issue .

With summer finally here I wonder if others will report this issue! MY13 FL2 SD4 HSE Ipanema Sand, 19" LR sparkle alloys , spoiler, rear camera , LR det. Towbar

I think strong sunshine is the word! I've noticed with mine that if the black handle is in the shade then the door is seems to be ok. Maybe its something in the handle itself. Black MY2013 SD4 GS Auto, Wood Company Armrest, Freel2 sticker.
