Spare Wheel.

I've finally started trying to sort a spare wheel, jack, etc., after only 12 months.... Embarassed I'm not a fan of repair kits, especially when towing the caravan. How did you all go about this? Buy a complete kit, off EBay / dealer etc.? Buy the wheel 2nd hand, then source a jack etc.? How much did it cost to buy a clamping bolt? (I don't think there is a one in the wheel well, & I'm at work, so can't have a quick look)

Someone locally is selling a complete set of alloys, with fairly worn tyres, for £150. A fairly worn tyre would do as a spare, as it would only be until the proper tyre was repaired / replaced. But I'd rather not be stuck with three spare spares.... Laughing

I've just bought the jack from a LR dealer on eBay. My last 3 LRs has had the goo but luckily never had to use it.

If the wheels were 17s and you were willing to post I would take one off your hands. 21MY Defender 90 S 3.0 D200

Spare wheel and jack

It's a very wise view to buy a spare wheel and jack.
The pump and goo kits only work for a limited type of failure ie a straightforward puncture pinhole. Goo will not be any good for any type of linear cut / gash.
If you have been successful in using the goo and follow on to the repairers most will refuse to clean and repair the tyre and will charge extra to clean any goo off the rim THEN after you have bought the replacement tyre, you have to buy another goo bottle.
Best advice is to buy either from eBay directly or find a specialist dismantler again possibly seen on eBay.
The spare and jack holds its value because you can still sell it again when you move cars or take it to your next FL.
The only economic reason for a goo kit is the saving to LR when they build the car!

If I was you, I'd buy the 4 wheels and stick the other three individually on eBay to turn a profit to pay for the jack and clamp.

I got a spare wheel from eBay but the tyre wasn't great. Got a tyre delivered from MyTyres on the web. The jack and clamping bolt was from a Land Rover dealer on eBay.

I feel better with the full spare as opposed to the gunk and pump.

When I bought mine I only had the goo, I asked the dealer nicely if I could have a full size spare wheel as I tow and the goo doesn't help sidewall tears, and I don't really want to the leave the kids at the road side very long, and today he dropped in a nice steel spare with tyre, jack and brace.

I specified the spare when I ordered my Freelander. The sales chap was surprised, said hardly any customers do that. 2020 Defender D200 110S Pangea Green

Hi denpet, no, these days you may get a space saver but more than likely you get goo, or nothing. Mine was a used one so I didn't have the choice of ordering when new. My11 freelander 2, xs, Manual, 18" hse sparkles, sidesteps, privacy, zermatt silver metallic, almond nutmeg alacantra, twin electric towbar

You can specify a full sized spare when ordering, think they're about £150-£180 for one that matches the alloys on the fitted wheels.
Early models came with a full sized spare but on a steel wheel, limited to 50mph I recall, later ones (post MY11?) came with the can of gloop as standard.

Thank's for your views everyone.

The guy selling wheels locally hasn't responded to my contacts, so that plan looks like it's gone tango uniform. The local dealer quoted over £320 for a full size spare, tyre, jack, etc. as we bought it 2 years old, spec'ing one in the order wasn't an option. I'm a little concerned about the kit from a dealer on EBay, as the tyre is a 225/65, and our vehicle has 235/65 tyres fitted. That said, I'm uncomfortable with only a can of goo in the boot. If the tyre fails, there's little point in Mrs Si phoning Mayday, if there's no spare to fit!

Took me 6 months to get a spare wheel sorted. Kept my mince pies peeled and dropped on a 17" alloy (doesn't match) from a member on here.

Refused to pay the dealer price and just got the jack kit from them instead. Cost me £35 for the alloy and £80 for the budget tyre as it just sits in the boot anyway.

I tried all sorts of places for a steel or a random alloy and it was either £££ or no joy.

The wheels themselves can be quite cheap - they ask more if it comes with a new or nearly new tyre, but you don't need a new one for the spare, so long as it's legal. I've bought wheels singly off e-bay, and also as a set (I sold on the ones I didn't want with no problem on here, got back what I paid). Probably the two options I would go for now are:
1 - buy a set of wheels cheap with worn tyres, get a set of winter tyres for them and use one as a spare in the summer (and a summer tyre as a spare in winter).
2 - some dealers are selling brand new sets of wheels and tyres for the cost of the tyres - presumably from new cars whose owners have specified an upgrade. You'd then be able to sell three of your existing wheels, or fit four winter tyres.
Using a different size wheel or tyre as your spare is, surprisingly, not illegal, although I wouldn't be keen myself. If buying wheels, make sure they are FR2 - FR1 wheels don't fit.

For added reassurance, I'm sure I read in the manual (yes, I read it once) that Land Rover Assist will attend to a puncture if you only have the gunk from purchase for up to three years FOC.
