Run out of fuel?

My daughter let her Freelander get down to a "range" of 12miles.
On restarting the car, the car won't rev.
Fortunately near filling station.
Filled with fuel, it still won't rev and has an engine fault message displaying.
Can anyone offer any advice please?

Won't rev at all , idles quite happily.
She assures me she has put diesel in it. Smile
Evey now and again it nearly cuts out, chuckes a lot of black smoke out then continues to idle.
Is there a simple way to bleed the fuel system?

I wouldn't know how to bleed the fuel system on a freelander nicedayforit
Im sure someone on here will..

Just done a google search and found nothing Neutral

In the past on other cars i have removed the fuel line and cranked the car over till fuel comes out - reconnected and its fix the problem, but not sure on a freely, im going back to the 80s things have come a long way BETTER looking half of the famous Twinlanders

Right, it seems the fuel system is self priming, which is what I would have expected.
It also seems the engine will cut out before fully running out of fuel to protect fuel pump etc.

Found this,

5: After limp mode and the vehicle has stopped you will need at least 4ltrs (0.9 imperial gallons) of fuel in the tank to restart the FL2.

6: After restarting the FL2 needs to be driven for 1.6 to 5kms (1 to 3mls) before all engine management and monitoring systems have been completely reset and show accurately the vehicles status.

7: If you've driven into a full engine stop after limp mode you need to reactivate the system as follows:
a) Press Brake Pedal and at the same time Press On the Start/Stop button and Crank Engine for min 5secs
b) Release Stop/Start Button
c) Press Brake Pedal and at the same time Press and Release the Start/Stop button to Crank the Engine. The engine should Fire and Tick Over normally within 5secs.
d) If Not - Pause for minimum of 10secs with the Ignition in Convenience Mode (i.e all dashboard display lights on) Before Repeating action 7c.

Thanks for all your help. Thumbs Up

Update, problem resolved. Thumbs Up
Turns out it was nothing to do with low fuel, just coincidence.
The throttle was sticking in the throttlebody and wouldn't respond to movement of the accelerator.
New throttle body fitted, back to normal.
