Hi all,

I seem to have a problem with my FL2 on long trips only. I posted a similar thread a few months back after doing a long trip and having the same sort of issues.

It seems after about 2 hours of driving (and towing a jetski so reving maybe a slight bit harder) the car wants to play up. First trip few months back the engine light came on, reduced engine performance popped up and the car just wouldnt rev past about 3500rpm so I had to slowly coast the car the other 2 hours to my destination.

Got the car back home and didnt have a problem for over 2000kms, no dramas at all, all reasonably short trips though nothing over maybe an hour on the road.

Few days ago did the same trip and same thing, approx 2 hours into the trip the car loses power (couldnt rev at all this time) coasted off the road and it stalled. Wouldn't start and started to stress out yet again.

Waited about 5 minutes and the car started and idled fine once again, drove about 20 minutes and then same thing, lost power and had to pull over and stalled. Ended up sitting around at a workshop for an hour who no surprise couldnt help me in the end, but it seemed the wait did it good and I managed to drive another 2 hours or so without any issue but I imagine it wasnt far off playing up.

My guess now is its a fuel pump issue, or at least some fuel delivery issue. Does it make any sense to any mechanics or anyone that maybe the fuel pump is just overheating or somehow struggling after about 2 hours and failing to work until it "sobers up" for awhile again? has anyone had any experience with an issue like this?

Im far from home im not going to bother getting it fixed where I am, I should be able to slowly coast it back home 4 hours with a few stops but im guessing im going to need a new fuel pump at least anyone got an idea on cost? imagine I wont be getting much change from 1k for it.

Before going to the drastic expense of a new fuel pump I would change the fuel filter and ensure the system is properly bled. There have been a few instances of blocked fuel filters causing issues. John

As above quote has suggested. Try changing the fuel filter & prior to that, if possible have your codes read. I had a similar issue, intermittent running prob with reduced engine performance light on my 58 FL2. Was caused by a clogged fuel filter. Codes logged were:- Low fuel pressure codes came up as a P0087 & P0088. Caused by clogged filter. landrover filter costs around 」40+ fitting, which is no more than an half an hours job, inc bleeding. Landy has now gone.

Evidently this is a common problem
Take it to your local LR dealer or who ever looks at your LR2 and your find once he as checked the Fault codes it will show
fuel pressure issues Sounds like a new filter and a touch of injector cleaner in the fuel tank will solve the problem Wink BETTER looking half of the famous Twinlanders

Forgot to mention I stopped at a wheel shop after the car was playing up just to get them to test the battery incase it was a cell dropping or something simple, had that and alternator checked and that was fine but I had just happened to pull upto a wheel shop directly next to a "land rover and 4wd specialist".

He had a tool he plugged into the ecu and the car didnt have any error messages logged at all, I asked him about the fuel filter but for someone who was a "land rover specialist" he said he wasnt sure on this model but he knew the freelander 1's had the fuel filter in the tank and was like one unit with the pump.

He had to go make a call and ask someone else and apparently they confirmed to him that my model (07 FL2 petrol) didnt have a seperate fuel filter anywhere easily accessible and wanted to charge me $800+ to replace the fuel pump the next day.

I think ill just wait till I get back to brisbane and i'll get my normal workshop to change the filter (and the pump if I need to) only problem is I wont be able to test it until my next long 2hr+ trip...

With your reduced engine performance message appearing. I'd probably say that codes were logged. Garage may not have right diagnostic equipment for your FL2.
Yours the petrol version (just realised) Laughing Then may not be fuel filter. Could be a none changeable one situated in the fuel tank. Just like my vaux/holden. Not sure on this though, as new to landy's.
Try changing the plugs. Helps to have some fault codes to work from. Could even be a faulty coil pack on your 3.2. Either that or fuel related.
Have friends in Brisbane, emigrated there 8 years ago. I visited 5 years ago. Landy has now gone.

Any word as to what caused this issues and what fixed it?

I am getting a P0087 code on my 3.2L i6 and I am about to change the Fuel Pressure Regulator part number LR015294.

My LR2 started stalling while driving in the city and I was able to pull to a parking lot and it eventually shut off. I waited a few minutes and it started back up. I drove it home and it tried stalling a couple more times then the CEL light came on. That's when i was able to get the code.

I sure hope is not the injectors or the fuel pump. Cuatro Por Cuatro

Sorry still no idea. Ive only ever had problems with it when 1) towing the jetski and 2) driving long distance, about 2 hr mark it will start to play up on me. When im back home I can drive around anywhere and never have a problem.

Im not sure if its towing thats causing the fault or a long drive. Heading back on another trip again in next few weeks except this time im not taking the ski so will see if it makes any difference.

Car does seem to drive/rev alot harder on my longer trips with the ski as the trip is pretty up and down on the highway, car spends abit of time in higher revs towing the ski uphill so im not sure if thats whats causing it.

Burtybear if yours is a petrol, I would suspect crank sensor, these often will not flag a fault because when the signal stop the ECU just thinks the engine has stopped running. Quite often with crank sensors they will fail when hot ! Common problem on v6 omega's stop or limp mode when hot and often wouldn't restart after fuel stop but leave a few mins and would fire up and away they go.

From a technical point of view the cam and crank sensors signal and the ECU look for a match called cam/crank correlation and should flag when failing but in practice very different

Weren't they just.....my MV6 went through 3 of them inside a year! Foraging near Gaydon....

My fuel cap has always made a sound when undoing it but just thought that was normal as its done it on all my previous cars in the past or so I thought? if its blocked how can I check, or unblock it?

If it is its been that way since day 1 and never had a problem until I started towing long distance, I guess if it is blocked theres going to be more pressure while towing? no idea.

Still having this nagging intermittent issue with this car. Would love to hear if anyone has had this issue before.

I took it to a dealer here and they wouldnt tell me anything other than its "fuel related" and suggested changing the fuel pump for $1500 odd but then wouldnt guarantee it would even fix the problem.. they wernt really interested in answering any questions I had about their diagnostic, not much help.

I took it to another independent workshop and the guys were more than happy to at least try and read some codes, his tool came up with "low fuel pressure fault" but couldnt pinpoint it to a sensor or part but his guess is it may be some control box that controls pressure to the pump but going to make a few enquiries and get back to me.

Im at a loss what to do, if its the fuel pump i'll replace it but I dont want to spend $1200 odd to find out later its a fuel pressure sensor playing up, or replace pressure sensors and control boxes to find out its the fuel pump, could end up costing me $2000+ and still not even have a fix.
