Hi. I'm looking to change my freelander to a newer one. I currently have a non-dpf freelander 2 (by choice) and the vast majority of my journeys are short. I bought an older freelander primarily because of the short journeys and potential dpf clogging issues. My main reason for changing is the potential increase in bills as mine ages. Has anyone who mainly does short journeys experienced any problems with the dpf or is it me worrying unduly? Any help would be genuinely appreciated. I so wish land rover would produce a decent petrol alternative!

I have a 2011 SD4 - which I am assuming has a DPF. Most of my 18000 miles have probably been less than 10 mile journeys. To be quite honest I would not even know that I have a DPF - no aggro - no problems - just complete reliability since the day I picked it up.

Same here no problems at all.

I don't have one, but I think most of the problems we have heard about have been from early non-UK models. Much less moaning from people with newer versions.

Same here too mainly short journeys . Some say two stroke helps  SD4 HSE Orkney Grey

I'm in the same situation, have a 07 GS which (touch wood ) has been pretty good faultwise for the last 5 years, however the glow plugs will need replacing before Winter.
Am looking for a replacement but all latest models have the dreaded DPF. My neighbour has a Jag with DPF and he says it's a pain in the a*rse. Trouble with living here is that I would have to travel some distance for a decent stretch of road to clear the filter and it's even worse in the Summer with all the visitors clogging up the roads (don't get me started on those towing caravans trying to negotiate country lanes )
Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a decent petrol engine 4x4 which can be considered as a replacement so it looks as if I will become a DPF owner/moaner  11 GS Bali Blue

I have an 06 reg December 2010 Freelander 2 My11 so it was one of the first MY11's.

In the first four weeks I had three break downs due to DFP the last having to be low loaded back to dealer.

LR engineers had to come out and had to ammend the computer programme to sort it out.

Since then, and 45k miles later not had a problem.

I do alot of motorway driving as well as B & C & unclassified roads.

As long as the vehicle get hot and has a good blast on the motorway from time to time there shouldn't be a problem.

Had mine for just over two years, if no one had told me a DPF was there I wouldn't have known, never a problem. p****d off with a Digital Keyboard Warrior

No DPF and no DMF for manual transmission. Another member of the failed FL2 clutch/DMF club, twice.

Dec 2010 TD4 manual (60 reg) with DPF and no problems with it. Now done 29600 miles. Usual journey 16 miles on A/B roads at max 60 mph and return later same day, occasional longer run.

Also 2013 SD4 auto (62 reg) with DPF and no problems. Now done 7000 miles, mostly off road with occasional long run on the road.

I would think even if you do relatively shortish journeys as long as you happen to be driving it when the filter decides to regenerate itself then youre ok, if youre unlucky and always just happen to switch off just before it does then you might have problems eventually with it clogging up, sounds like a game of Russian Roulette, some are lucky some are not?

I've got a 2011 HSE SD4 and have had DPF issues just the once; car taken back to dealer on a recovery truck from LR Assist. All sorted out within 48 hours by a bit of software updating and no troubles since. Driven mostly on long journeys using premium fuels but the car spends days or weeks not moving: I use the train for the commute and my other car (petrol mini) for short local journeys. All DPFs will clog if you only do short journeys though - not just LR.
